Cecil Throws First Career No-Hitter Against Long Beach State

LOS ANGELES – Senior right-handed pitcher Jada Cecil threw the first no-hitter of her collegiate career to lead the No. 7-ranked UCLA softball team to a 9-0 victory over Long Beach State in five innings at Easton Stadium Tuesday evening.
Cecil's no-hitter marked the Bruins' (42-7, 13-3 Big Ten) third of the season and the 126th in program history. The Temecula, Calif. native totaled eight strikeouts – her second-highest total of the season – and issued two walks and two hit-by-pitches in her outing.
"(My team's reaction and celebration) was definitely special and it meant a lot to me just because I know they're so happy for me," Cecil said. "Obviously, I'm happy for all their successes, too. To have that reciprocated tonight felt amazing."
Cecil allowed runners to reach base in the first, third and fourth innings. She faced the most trouble of the night in the fourth, drilling a batter with a pitch and walking the next to put two runners aboard with two outs. Cecil escaped the inning with a pop out to third baseman Jordan Woolery.
Offensively, UCLA totaled nine base hits and recorded eight walks for its second most in a game this season. Senior Savannah Pola went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. First baseman Megan Grant was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, two runs batted and logged the Bruins' only extra-base hit of the night (double).
UCLA's bats provided Cecil with a three-run cushion after the first inning. A series of three straight base hits by Pola, Woolery and Grant scratched the Bruins' first run across. Grant's double to right-center gap scored Pola from second base. The next batter Kaniya Bragg brought Woolery home on a sacrifice fly to left field. After a walk to Ryle Slimp, designated player Alexis Ramirez continued her hot stretch at the plate by dropping an RBI single into left field to score UCLA's third and final run of the inning.
Three more walks loaded the bases for freshman catcher Maggie Daniel in the bottom of the third who drove in a fourth run on another sacrifice fly, this time to center field.
The Bruins hit around the order to score five runs off four hits and three walks to put the game in run-rule territory. Grant recorded her second RBI base hit – a single – to open the scoring in the frame. Two batters later, pinch hitter Sofia Mujica delivered a two-RBI single up the middle with two outs to increase UCLA's lead to 7-0. The next two runs scored on a dropped third strike and passed ball during Daniel's second at-bat and a bases-loaded walk to pinch-hitter Jayla Castro.
