Tinsley Shuts Out No. 21 Ohio State, 7-0, to Secure Top-25 Sweep
April 05, 2025 | Softball
LOS ANGELES – Right-handed starting pitcher Taylor Tinsley on the No. 9-ranked UCLA softball team tossed a one-hit, complete-game shutout to down No. 21 Ohio State, 7-0, and secure the series sweep at Easton Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Tinsley's gem marked the first time that Ohio State, the nation's leader in home runs, had been shut out this season. The Lawrenceville, Ga. native finished with 10 strikeouts, including four looking, and allowed just three baserunners in her outing. In her career, Tinsley has now recorded eight complete-game shutouts and seven double-digit strikeout games.
Tinsley improved her record to 9-2 and dropped her earned run average on the season to 2.28. Also of note, Tinsley snapped Ohio State's 14-game streak with multiple home runs.
Offensively, the Bruins (36-5, 9-1 Big Ten) totaled 10 hits and used a pair of three-run home runs from redshirt sophomore Alexis Ramirez and senior Savannah Pola in the bottom of the sixth to ice the game.
Tinsley retired the side in five of her seven innings. In the first, Tinsley struck out the first two batters she faced looking. In total, the top five hitters of the Buckeyes' lineup (30-9-1, 6-3 Big Ten) each struck out for a total of seven times.
UCLA scratched its first run across the board in the bottom half of the first on three infield singles. Leadoff hitter Jessica Clements and Pola each recorded infield singles. A fielder's choice groundout by junior Jordan Woolery put runners on the corners with one out. After a strikeout to Megan Grant, freshman Rylee Slimp hit a ball deep in the hole to shortstop, allowing Clements to score from third.
Ohio State's first baserunners against Tinsley came in succession in the top of the third with a walk to Skylar Limon and single given up to Taylor Cruse, putting two aboard with one out. Tinsley worked out of the jam by inducing two infield pop outs.
Grant and Slimp logged back-to-back singles to lead off and set the stage for the Bruins' six-run sixth inning. One out later, Ramirez hit an 0-1 delivery over the left field fence for her first home run of the season and second of her career to pad UCLA's lead to 4-0. One walk and one Buckeyes fielding error put two more aboard for Pola. The Santa Ana, Calif. product hit a wall-scraper three-run homer – her seventh of the year – to right field for the finishing blow.
