Grant, Woolery Homer in Run-Rule Win over Cal Baptist
April 08, 2025 | Softball
RIVERSIDE, Calif. โ The No. 8-ranked UCLA softball team used a pair of home runs from juniors Megan Grant and Jordan Woolery to defeat Cal Baptist, 10-1, in five innings at John C. Funk Stadium Tuesday evening.
ย
With tonight's result, the Bruins (37-5, 9-1 Big Ten) extend their single-season program record in run-rule wins to 23. UCLA's offense generated its 10 runs off seven hits and nine free passes (seven walks and two hit-by-pitches), marking the eighth time this season the Bruins lineup tallied seven or more walks in a game.
ย
Woolery delivered the first of UCLA's two biggest swings of the night with a two-run shot over the center field wall just four pitches into the game in the first inning. Senior utility Savannah Pola reached base before Woolery on a single that dropped into right field.
ย
Woolery ranks second in the Big Ten Conference with 17 home runs, trailing only her teammate Grant who has 18. The two Bruin Bombers are tied for first in the conference with 61 runs batted in.
ย
The Shelly Carlin UCLA Head Softball Coach Kelly Inouye-Perez used a pitch by committee approach to tonight's ballgame. Freshman righty Addisen Fisher earned the nod in the circle and put forth two strong innings, allowing just one baserunner (hit) and notching one strikeout.
ย
UCLA pushed one more run across in the second inning thanks to an RBI double down the right field line by Kaitlyn Terry. Terry got caught in a rundown between third and home for the first out of the inning off a groundball hit by freshman Rylee Slimp, putting a halt to the rally.
ย
The Bruins put a crooked seven up on the scoreboard in the top of the third blow the game wide open. Shortstop Kaniya Bragg and designated player Alexis Ramirez opened the inning with back-to-back singles to left field. Five of the next six UCLA batters worked walks to score three runs and bring the lead to 6-0. Woolery drew the last of the five walks, keeping the bases loaded for Grant. On a 1-2 delivery, Grant hit a towering drive to center field for her second grand slam in the last three games.
ย
UCLA now has six grand slams this season while Grant has five in her career.
ย
Terry moved from her starting position in right field to take over pitching responsibilities in the circle with a 10-0 lead. The southpaw allowed a walk and induced three groundouts for the shutdown frame. The Lancers (17-23, 5-7 WAC) knocked Terry around in the bottom of the fourth with three straight base hits to score a run. Terry gave up five total hits in her 2.0-inning outing en route to earning her 15th win of the season.
ย
Jada Cecil was the last of the Bruins' arms to see action, recording a scoreless fifth inning to secure the win.
