No. 14 UCLA's Winning Streak Snapped in 14-Inning Battle Against San Diego
April 06, 2025 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES -ย The No. 14-ranked UCLA baseball team saw its nine-game winning streak come to an end after falling to San Diego, 4-3, in 14 innings on Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
ย
UCLA (25-6, 10-2 Big Ten) left a total of 18 runners on base and went just 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position as it squandered multiple opportunities to plate the winning run in extra innings.
ย
Both teams were unable to capitalize in bases-loaded, no-outs situations in the 11thย inning before the Bruins loaded the bases again in the 13th, but once again, failed to score.
ย
San Diego finally provided the finishing blow in the top of the 14thย when Austin Smith launched his second home run of the game to lift his team to the improbable 4-3 win.
ย
Roch Cholowsky collected three hits for the second straight contest. UCLA's shortstop went 7-for-13 (.538) in the series to lead the Bruins offensively. He increased his batting average to a team-best .372.
ย
San Diego replicated their quick start from Saturday's contest, taking an early lead in the top of the first inning when Smith hit a two-run homer.
ย
UCLA answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning tie the game at 2-2. Base hits from Dean West and Cholowsky started the rally before Mulivai Levu was plunked to load the bases. Roman Martin lifted a fly ball to center field for a sacrifice fly, then AJ Salgado brought another run home with an RBI ground out.
ย
The Bruins took their first lead in the third inning when Cholowsky doubled off the wall in right-center field before Levu promptly brought him around to score when his ground ball scooted through the left side for an RBI base hit.
ย
After four consecutive scoreless frames, the Toreros pushed a run across to tie the game in the top of the eighth inning. Jack O'Connor limited further damage, however, by inducing a double play ball to end the threat with the bases loaded.
ย
ย The game extended into extra inning after neither team was able to take the lead after nine innings played.
ย
In the top of the 11th, San Diego loaded the bases with no outs and brought its leadoff hitter, Jack Gurevitch, to the plate. Head Coach John Savage went to the bullpen and called upon Will Goldberg to get out of the jam. In his first appearance of the season, the left hander induced a ground ball to Levu, who quickly fired home to keep the Toreros off the board. Goldberg then got another ground ball to first base for a 3-2-3 double play to pull off the impressive escape act.
ย
UCLA also loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, but failed to score, and the game to the 13th. Cashel Dugger lifted a fly ball to right-center field, but the would-be winning run was thrown out at the plate.
ย
In the top of the 14th, San Diego finally scored the game's winning run when Smith smacked his second homer of the game. UCLA was unable to mount a comeback in its final trip to the plate and suffered its first defeat since March 21.
ย
The Bruins will host Long Beach State for a midweek contest on Tuesday, April 8 at 6 p.m. PT. The game will be available to watch on B1G+.
