UCLA Falls to Cal in Home Opener, 1-0

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's soccer team fell 1-0 to California in its home opening match on Sunday night at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. Luka Lukic headed in the winner for the Golden Bears at the 89:42 mark of the second half to earn the 1-0 win.
Freshman Ryan Tiltack made his debut for the Bruins, starting in goal. The Toronto, Canada, native made multiple great saves to keep the match square throughout, before Cal found the back of the net in the final seconds off a corner kick that Lukic headed in.
The Bruins, who were honoring the 1985 National Champions on the 40th anniversary of their championship on Sunday night, started the game brightly. In the opening 30 minutes UCLA had multiple opportunities to find of the back of the net, with Tamir Ratoviz stinging the palms of Connor Lambe in goal for the Golden Bears in the fifth minute.
Sergi Solans Ormo also had a shot in the 15th minute that went just wide of the post and the two sides went into the halftime break tied.
In the second half, Tiltack kept the Bruins in it with two great saves late on. First in the 75th minute he made a great reflex save to deny Cal when a shot went to his near-post through traffic.
Tiltack then made another brilliant stop in the 85th minute when another shot came through traffic and he had to dive back across his goal to parry the ball out for a corner.
Unfortunately for the Bruins, Cal would score in the 90th minute to take the game, 1-0.
Up Next: UCLA returns to action on Thursday evening when it hosts Cal State Fullerton. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm PT and the match will be broadcast on B1G+.
