BRUINS BEGIN BIG TEN PLAY SATURDAYย
No. 4 UCLA (4-2) opens Big Ten Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 13 against Oregon (2-4-1) at ย 6 p.m. at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. The match will be broadcast on Big Ten Plus. ย  ย  ย  ย  ย

SCOUTING THE DUCKS
Oregon enters Saturday's game with a 2-4-1 record with wins over Weber State and Hawaii but is on a three-game skid. Taylor Bryan leads the team with two goals, and Sydney Chura and Carly Cormack each have one goal and two assists. Goalkeeper Caeley Goldstein holds a 0.86 goals against average and has two solo and one shared shutout. Oregon is coached by Traci Joyner in her first season with the Ducks after a five-year stint as head coach at UC Davis. Joyner was the 2023 Big West Coach of the Year.ย

THE SERIES WITH OREGON
UCLA leads the all-time series 25-2-1. The Bruins are unbeaten in the last 18 matches against the Ducks, going 17-0-1 since 2007. UCLA won last year's match, 2-1, in Eugene in a game that the Bruins trailed 1-0 after a 77th minute goal by Taylor Bryan. UCLA tied it in the 80th minute on a Sunshine Fontes penalty kick, and Jordan Geis scored the game-winner in the 83rd minute. The Bruins won the last matchup in Los Angeles in 2023, 4-0. Emma Egizii scored a goal in that game, and Lexi Wright and Val Vargas tallied assists. Oregon's last win against UCLA came in 2006, 2-1 in overtime. ย  ย  ย

LAST TIME OUT
No. 18 UCLA shut out No. 1 Stanford, 2-0, handing the Cardinal its first loss of the season. The Bruins picked up their fourth shutout of the year and third in a row. Bella Winn scored in the fifth minute of the game on a rebound shot following an Emma Egizii saved shot, and Lexi Wright added an insurance goal in the 79th minute off a perfect long pass by Oruha Hayashi. UCLA took down a top-ranked Stanford team for the first time ever and held down the nation's top scoring offense, with freshman goalkeeper Daphne Nakfoor recording nine saves on 21 Cardinal shots.ย

IN THE RANKINGS
UCLA leapfrogged 14 spots from No. 18 to No. 4 in the United Soccer Coaches poll after beating then-No. 1 Stanford on Sunday. The Bruins also moved up from No. 8 to No. 5 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll. Four of the teams Bruins have played this year are currently ranked in the Top 25 of the coaches' poll - No. 1 Tennessee, No. 3 Stanford, No. 12 BYU and No. 24 Georgia. ย ย

NAKFOOR EARNS NATIONAL, CONFERENCE HONORS
UCLA freshman goalkeeper Daphne Nakfoor has been named the Top Drawer Soccer National Player of the Week and the Big Ten Conference Goalkeeper of the Week after recording a pair of shutouts at Portland and against top-ranked Stanford. Nakfoor led the Bruins to a 2-0 win at Portland on Sept. 4 before coming back home to record a 2-0 victory over No. 1 Stanford on Sept. 7. In the Portland victory, Nakfoor made two saves on three shots. Against Stanford, she recorded nine saves on 21 shots against the Cardinal, the most saves by a Bruin goalkeeper since Lauren Brzykcy also had nine against Duke in 2022. Nakfoor became the first goalkeeper this season to record a shutout against Stanford, which entered the game as the nation's top scoring offense. She now has three solo and one shared shutout this season and lowered her goals against average to 0.36.

DEFENSE HOLDING STRONG
In six games, UCLA's defense has recorded four shutouts and allowed just two goals, for a team goals against average of 0.33. The Bruins have allowed just one goal in the run of play, as their other goal allowed was scored on a penalty kick. UCLA has held opponents to single-digit shots in three games, including a single-shot game against Tennessee and a three-shot game at Portland. Freshman goalkeeper Daphne Nakfoor has allowed just two goals and holds a 0.36 goals against average with three solo and one shared shutout. Mariangela Medina has a shared shutout and did not allow a goal in the second half of play against Long Beach State in her collegiate debut. ย  ย  ย

COMEBACK KIDS
Redshirt seniors Emma Egizii and Lexi Wright and sophomore forward Bella Winn have all returned to action after missing most, if not all, of the 2024 season with injuries, and all three played big roles in UCLA's 2-0 win over top-ranked Stanford on Sept. 7. Egizii scored two goals in three games in 2024 before getting injured during game four of the season. Her return to play in UCLA's exhibition win against LMU this year was highlighted by a left-footed rocket that gave UCLA a 3-0 lead in the second half. She scored her first official goal of the season against Portland and then assisted on the game-winner against Stanford. Winn scored the game-winning goal against the Cardinal, knocking in Egizii's rebounded shot. She also had the game-winner in the Bruins' 1-0 win at Georgia in the season opener. In 2024, Winn recorded a goal and an assist in the Bruins' first two games of the year but was injured while scoring her goal in game two and did not return the rest of the season. Wright also scored in the Stanford win, her second career goal in two games against No. 1-ranked teams. She has played every game for the Bruins this season after sustaining a season-ending injury early in preseason training in 2024. ย  ย ย

BRUIN DEBUTS
Eight players made their Bruin debuts in the season opener, including six freshmen. Making starts were senior transfer Jennie Immethun and freshmen Daphne Nakfoor, Grace Shank, Leena Powell and Meila Brewer. Coming in off the bench were junior transfer Oruha Hayashi and freshmen Leila Edris and Payten Cooper. Sofia Atehortua earned her first career minutes against Tennessee, Julia Molnar made her collegiate debut at BYU, Cassidy Doogan played her first game against Long Beach State, and Siena Meyer debuted at Portland. ย  ย

EGIZII, IMMETHUN, WRIGHT NAMED TO WATCH LIST
Bruin seniors Emma Egizii, Jennie Immethun and Lexi Wright were selected to the Big Ten Players to Watch List. Both Egizii and Wright are coming off redshirt seasons, as they each suffered season-ending injuries early in 2024. Wright ranked third on the Bruin team in scoring in both 2022 (22 points) and 2023 (15 points) and was an all-conference performer in 2023. Egizii scored two goals in just three games a year ago prior to her injury and has five career goals. Wright and Egizii each played on UCLA's 2022 NCAA Championship team. Immethun enters her first year as a Bruin after transferring from TCU, where she was an All-Big 12 defender and 20-game starter in 2024. ย  ย

GOOD WORK, LEXIย
Redshirt senior Lexi Wright was selected as a member of the inaugural Allstate NACDA Good Works Team (Fall). The award recognizes male and female student-athletes across all divisions and sports who go above and beyond in their commitment to community service, academic achievement and athletic performance. Wright supports children with cancer through Zoe's Goal-Scoring Against Childhood Cancer, a non-profit organization that raises awareness about pediatric cancer, advocates for research and funding and supports young cancer patients. Wright does regular hospital visits to UCLA's Mattel Children's Hospital to visit with patients and has worked with the UCLA campus organization Unified, which plays sports with special needs kids weekly and holds an Inclusive Sports Day. She also volunteers with Football For Her, a non-profit organization that provides a safe space and motivates those who identify as female or non-binary to play, regardless of their economic standing.ย

IMPACT TRANSFERSย
UCLA welcomed two experienced transfers to the squad in 2025 - defender Jennie Immethun and forward Oruha Hayashi. Immethun comes to UCLA from TCU, where she earned second-team All-Big 12 honors in 2024. She started 20 games in 2024 while helping the Big 12 champions record seven shutouts, and in 2023, she started in 10 games. Oruha joined the Bruins after two years at Iowa Western, where she twice won the United Soccer Coaches Player of the Year for Junior College Division 1. Oruha, who scored 25 goals in 2024 and 19 in 2023, was selected the 2024-25 Betty Jo Graber NJCAA Female Student-Athlete of the Year. Both have already made big impacts on their new team, as Immethun was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Bruins record a shutout in the season opener. She has played in every minute of every game for UCLA this year and has two goal line saves. Hayashi scored a goal in the Bruins' exhibition win over LMU and netted her first official goal as a Bruin in the 2-0 win over Long Beach State and her first assist on UCLA's final goal in the 2-0 win over Stanford. ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย

WELCOME FRESHMENย
The Bruins brought in a dynamic recruiting class, highlighted by U.S. Youth National Team players Sofia Atehortua, Meila Brewer, Cassidy Doogan, Daphne Nakfoor, Leena Powell and Grace Shank, and Egyptian Youth National Team player Laila Edris. Powell played in the 2025 U-20 Concacaf Championships, and Brewer helped lead the U-17s to the 4 Nations Tournament title this summer. Also joining UCLA in 2025 are freshmen Payten Cooper, Jordyn Dunn, Siena Meyer and Julia Molnar. All 11 freshmen saw action in the Bruins' exhibition against LMU, and all but Dunn has seen action during the regular season. Nakfoor and Powell have started in each of UCLA's first six games. Cooper, the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, is tied for second on the team in scoring with three points. Powell and Shank each have an assist, and Nakfoor holds a 0.36 goals against average with three solo and one shared shutout. Brewer started in the first two games before being called up to the U.S. Under-17 National Team for a pair of games in Spain on Aug. 28 and 31. Brewer returned to start for the Bruins in the shutout win over No. 1 Stanford. ย  ย  ย  ย  ย ย
