FULLERTON, Calif. – The No. 8-ranked UCLA softball team defeated East Texas A&M, 14-0, and No. 4 Florida, 15-12, on day one of the Judi Garman Classic at Anderson Family Field on Friday.
With the Bruins' (15-3) two wins, UCLA softball head coach Kelly Inouye-Perez passed her predecessor Sue Enquist for the most wins by a head coach in program history with 888 (read more).
Game 2: UCLA 15, Florida 12
UCLA handed Florida its first loss of the season in a three hour and 21 minute-long contest that featured 27 runs, 36 hits and 27 runners left on base. Rylee Slimp, Jordan Woolery and Kaniya Bragg each recorded three base hits to help the Bruins to their first victory over a top-5 opponent this year.
Playing as the designated visitors, the Bruins jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the top of the first with a two-run homer from Jordan Woolery and Aleena Garcia's first career grand slam. Garcia's blast to dead center marked UCLA's sixth grand slam of the year and second of the day after freshman Jolyna Lamar's tater in game one versus East Texas A&M.
The Gators (22-1) answered every punch the Bruins threw all afternoon. In the bottom half of the first, Florida's first four batters all reached base with leadoff hitter Taylor Shumaker and No. 3 hitter Kenleigh Cahalan both homering. Florida scored a fourth run and chased UCLA starter Taylor Tinsley out of the game before the first frame came to a close.
UCLA got three runs back in the top of the second on a three-run blast by catcher Alexis Ramirez that wrapped fair around the left field foul pole. Florida put a dent in UCLA's 9-4 lead again with a pair of RBI singles in the bottom half to cut the deficit to three.
A sacrifice fly by freshman Bri Alejandre in the third inning scored the Bruins' 10th run. Freshman pitcher Natalie Cable recorded the first scoreless half inning of the game in the bottom of the fourth thanks to some scrappy defensive play. With a runner on first base and two outs, left fielder Rylee Slimp lost a fly ball in the sunlight but recuperated to gun down Florida's Townsen Thomas at home plate.
The Bruins put the game in run-rule territory with a five-run fourth inning that pushed the lead to 15-6. UCLA scored two on bases-loaded walks, one run on a single by Kaniya Bragg through the 5-6 hole and two more on a single by Ramsey Suarez that took a bad hop over the Gator second baseman's head.
After Cable surrendered three runs in the bottom of the fourth, Tinsley re-entered the circle to close out the remainder of the contest. She got out of bases-loaded jams in each of the fourth and fifth innings.
Shumaker homered off Tinsley for a second time in the sixth inning to bring the margin to 15-10. She came around to hit again the very next inning in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded and two outs while the tying run stood in the on-deck circle. Shumaker recorded her fourth hit of the ballgame with a two-RBI double to cut the lead to 15-12.
Tinsley recorded the final out against Florida slugger Jocelyn Erickson on a groundout to first base.
Despite losing the game, Florida's 21 hits were most-ever by a UCLA opponent. Today's victory also marked UCLA's first win against an opponent that scored 10+ runs since beating Florida State, 14-10, at the 2023 Clearwater Invitational.
Game 1: UCLA 14, East Texas A&M 0 (5 inn.)
The Bruins won their first game of the day against the Lions (5-15) by a score of 14-0. UCLA put up a five spot in the first, six more runs in the second and its last three in the third.
Lamar accounted for a quarter of the Bruins' hit total with a 3-for-3 performance featuring two home runs, including a grand slam. The freshman from Cary, N.C. finished with a career-high seven RBIs, which is tied for the most by a Bruin so far this season.
Megan Grant, Ramsey Suarez and Alejandre also left the yard with home runs. Grant is tied for the NCAA lead in home runs with 12 and is the sole leader in slugging percentage with a 1.513 mark.
Woolery walked in each of her two plate appearances and came around to score twice.
Redshirt junior Sydney Somerndike allowed two baserunners while striking out three batters over her 3.0-inning start. She improved her record to 3-0.
