February 07, 2026 | Softball
IRVINE, Calif. โ The No. 7 UCLA softball team continued its slugging ways, bashing eight home runs across two mercy-rule victories over Oregon State and Utah at the Mark Campbell Invitational at Bill Barber Park on Saturday. The Bruins (4-0) defeated the Beavers, 12-4, and Utes, 11-0, both in five innings.
ย
Through four games, UCLA has homered 15 times and has a team slugging percentage of 1.055. Seven different Bruins have left the yard with senior Jordan Woolery and junior Kaniya Bragg each homering a team-high three times.
ย
Saturday was highlighted by a pair of two-homer performances from Bragg against the Beavers (2-2) and freshman Bri Alejandre against the Utes (3-1). Each of Bragg's blasts were three-run shots with the last ending the game in mercy-rule fashion, 12-4.
ย
Sophomore Rylee Slimp led the team with five hits in her seven at-bats across the two games. Three of her knocks went for extra-bases with one home run and two doubles.
ย
Pitchers Brynne Nally and Taylor Tinsley put together stellar outings in the circle. Nally did not allow a hit and retired 10 of the 11 batters she faced with five strikeouts in her 3.1 innings of relief against Oregon State. She earned her first win in a Bruin uniform.
ย
Tinsley took a no-hitter into the fifth inning versus Utah. The Utes first baserunner reached on Tinsley with two outs in the top of the fourth. The Lawrenceville, Ga. native finished the ninth shutout of her career with seven strikeouts in a one-hitter. Redshirt junior catcher Alexis Ramirez recorded the final out of the game with a beautiful back-pick to Woolery at first base that caught Utah's Reese Lee napping.
ย
Game 1: UCLA 12, Oregon State 4 (5 inn.)
For the first time in the early season, UCLA found itself trailing after Oregon State's Jaeya Butler hit a solo homer off starting pitcher Sydney Somerndike in the second at-bat of the game. The Bruins answered in the bottom half by taking the lead on a two-run home run by senior Megan Grant to straightaway center. Grant has reached base in 12 of her 19 plate appearances coming via six walks, two hit-by-pitches and four hits, including two homers.
Oregon State responded the next top half with a three spot thanks to an RBI single and a second blast by Butler that scored two.
ย
UCLA reclaimed the lead for good in a five-run third inning. Bragg delivered the game-tying and go-ahead runs on the first of her three-run homers. After junior transfer Soo-Jin Berry reached on a fielding error, Aleena Garcia and Alejandre hit back-to-back doubles to plate three runs and extend the Bruins' advantage to 7-4.
ย
The Bruins threw the finishing blows in the bottom of the fifth. Slimp drove in the first run of the inning on an RBI double to left-center. A four-pitch walk to Grant set the stage for Bragg's heroics. The sophomore from Garden Grove came through with the mercy-rule walk-off, marking the first multi-HR game of her career.
ย
Game 2: UCLA 11, Utah 0 (5 inn.)
While Tinsley mowed down her opposition, the Bruin bats provided plenty of run support with 11 hits โ seven of which went for extra-bases โ and seven free passes (six walks, one hit-by-pitch).
ย
Slimp carried the fireworks over into Game 2 with her second leadoff homer of Week 1. She recorded her third and final RBI extra-base hit of the day with a double in the third inning.
ย
UCLA pushed five more runs across in the second inning with a homer from Alejandre, RBI doubles from Slimp and Woolery and an RBI single by Bragg.
ย
In the third, Garcia and Alejandre tagged Oregon State for back-to-back home runs to bring the score into mercy-rule territory at 8-0.
