HONOLULU, Hawaii - The top-ranked UCLA softball team opened play at the Chevron Paradise Softball Classic on Thursday, defeating Texas Tech by a 3-2 margin. The Bruins improve to 7-0 with the win, while the Red Raiders are 0-7 in the 2000 season.
UCLA, the designated visiting team, started quickly, scoring a run in the top of the first, when starting pitcher Amanda Freed led off with a single to centerfield which was followed by a walk to Natasha Watley, and an RBI single to right field for Julie Adams. Adams was making her first appearance of the season as a designated player, sitting out the first weekend of the season because of her injured left shoulder.
In the top of the sixth, UCLA added two more runs, with a leadoff triple by senior second baseman Lyndsey Klein, and an RBI single by Julie Marshall. Stephanie Swenson came in to run for Marshall and was advanced to third on two wild pitches before a single to left field by Courtney Dale brought her home for the Bruins third run of the game.
Freed took control from the start, facing the minimum number of batters in the first four innings before issuing a walk to Texas Tech's Paula Workman to lead off the fifth inning. Freed did not allow a base hit until the sixth inning, when Tamara Harrington doubled to left field to lead off the sixth inning. The Red Raiders scored both of their runs in that frame, both unearned. Texas Tech was unable to plate the tying run, however, and UCLA won by a 3-2 margin.
UCLA returns to action on Friday at 1 p.m. Hawaii Time, facing off against Hofstra for their second contest of the Chevron Paradise Softball Classic.
