Softball Squeaks Out 5-4 Win Over No. 19 Texas

HONOLULU - The top-ranked UCLA softball team improved its season record to a spotless 9-0 with an extra-innings victory over No. 19 Texas on Friday at the Paradise Softball Classic.
UCLA, the designated visiting team, took an early lead in the top of the second inning, scoring the game's first run when Julie Adams walked, was eventually wild pitched to third base, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chrissy Buck.
The Longhorns answered in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run home run by shortstop Audrey Hendricks, and would add two more runs in the bottom of the fourth with a two-RBI double by second baseman Lindsay Gardner, giving the Longhorns a 4-1 advantage. UCLA closed the gap in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs on a two-RBI double by Lyndsay Klein and an RBI single by Julie Marshall.
The score remained tied at four until the top of the eighth inning, when the tiebreaker rule started the inning with Julie Marshall placed on second base. From there, Marshall was advanced to third base on a wild pitch and scored on a second wild pitch by Carmen Martinez.
Amanda Freed earned her fifth pitching victory of the season, as she pitched all eight innings and struck out seven batters.
UCLA returns to action on Saturday, facing off against No. 15 Long Beach State at 5 p.m. Pacific Time and No. 20 Hawai'i at 11 p.m. Pacific Time. Paradise Softball Classic Tournament action concludes on Sunday with championship play.
