LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UCLA softball team won its first game of the day, 6-0, over Saint Mary's, but the second scheduled game of the day was rained out.
The Bruins spread out their runs against the Gaels, scoring in the second, fourth, fifth and seventh innings. In the second, freshman Tairia Mims led off with an infield single, was sacrificed to second by Toria Auelua. Shortstop Crissy Buck singled Mims home from second before being thrown out to end the inning.
UCLA added three unearned runs in the fourth inning, including two on a double by Lupe Brambila, and the final run of the ballgame was scored by Lyndsey Klein, who singled, stole second base, was wild pitched to third and scored on an RBI single by Julie Marshall.
The second game of the day scheduled for the Bruins was a 7 p.m. first pitch against Long Beach State. The Bruins and 49ers played four and a half scoreless innings before the game was called because of rain.
The Bruins were named the tournament's top seed for Sunday's elimination play based on run differential, as the rained out game would have determined the tournament's top seed.
UCLA is scheduled to play the second semifinal game of the day at 1 p.m. Sunday, but the weather forecast for the day calls for a 100% chance of rain.
