
Women's Volleyball Downs No. 19 Washington State

LOS ANGELES - The seventh-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team notched its second straight victory on Friday evening, defeating Washington State 15-8, 15-5, 15-8. The Bruins are now 7-3 overall, 2-0 in the Pac-10 Conference, while the Cougars fall to 8-2, 0-2 Pac-10.
In the opening game of the match, the Bruins came out of the gate with five kills for junior outside hitter Kristee Porter, and posted four team blocks, all of which involve senior middle blocker Elisabeth Bachman. The Cougars were unable to counter, and posted a team attack percentage of -.122 for the game.
The second game saw UCLA sprint out to a 12-4 lead. Bachman continued to put together an impressive match, completing the second game with 7 kills on 13 total attacks without a hitting error, while upping her block assist total to six for the match. The Bruins closed out the second game with a 15-5 win, and went to the locker rooms with a 2-0 lead.
For the second straight night, UCLA's opponent came out of the locker room to play very well in the third game of the match. The Cougars sprinted out to a 7-1 lead before the Bruins started to chip away at their lead. Porter posted six of the Bruins first seven kills in the game. The torch was then passed to sophomore Lauren Fendrick, who had seven of her 11 kills in the third game of the match. Fendrick took three of the Bruins last four kills, as UCLA scored its last five points to close out the match under the service of Lauren Hogan. UCLA scored the last 10 points of the match, and took game three by a 15-8 margin.
Three Bruins finished with double-figure kills, led by Porter with 15. Fendrick chipped in with 11 kills, and Bachman, who started the evening needing 15 kills to reach 1,000 on her career, finished with 13 on the evening. She did, however, lead all players on the blocks, posting six block assists. Fendrick double-doubled with 12 digs, while freshman defensive specialist Stacey Lee chipped in with 10 digs.
The Bruins take to the road next weekend, traveling to the Bay Area for a Friday evening matchup against Cal before a Saturday match at Stanford. Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. start. Saturday's match against the Cardinal will be broadcast live on www.uclabruins.com with Lou Riggs and Paul Nihipali calling the action.
