BERKELEY, CA - It was a record-setting night for the Bruins on Friday, as UCLA downed Cal 3-1 with game scores of 8-15, 15-9, 15-4,15-7. With the win, UCLA improves to 8-3, 3-0 in the Pac-10, while Cal falls to 5-4, 1-2. In the match, UCLA senior Elisabeth Bachman becomes the fourth Bruin and 14th Pac-10 player in history to record 1,000 career kills and 500 career digs, while reaching both milestones in this match. Additionally, sophomore Lauren Fendrick set a new UCLA record with seven service aces in the four-game match.

It took just three rallies for senior Elisabeth Bachman to post her 1,000th career kill, with Bachman posting a kill on the first rally of the match, a block assist with Ashley Bowles on the second rally, and her 1,000th career kill on the third rally. From there, the match started with a close battle in the first game before UCLA pulled out to an early lead at 8-5. Cal then scored the next 10 points to take the opening game of the match 15-8.

The Bruins sprinted out to a 6-0 lead in the second game, but watched Cal climb back to within one point at 7-6. The Bruins regrouped from that point, stretching to an 11-7 lead At 11-8, UCLA's Lauren Fendrick stepped back to serve and promptly downed two consecutive service aces and bringing the score to 13-8 before Cal earned a sideout. A Kristee Porter kill gave the Bruins their first game point, one they were unable to convert. Cal put up one final point before Bachman and setter Erika Selsor combined for a block assist, Bachman's fifth of the night, and Porter's 10th kill ended it at 15-9 to tie the match at one game apiece.

The teams came out of the locker room and started a back-and-forth battle. UCLA went out to an early 3-0 lead, the match was then tied at 4-4 before the Bruins started to put together a rally. After three straight points on the service of defensive specialist Stacey Lee brought the Bruin lead to 8-4, Cal called its first timeout. Two sideouts brought Fendrick to the service line. A kill by Bachman and two service errors, including one charged to the Cal team because they were out of rotation, brought the UCLA lead to 12-4 and Cal head coach Rich Feller called his final timeout. The Bruins reached game point at 14-4 thanks to two consecutive kills by Porter, and the game was clinched when Fendrick stuffed a Cal overpass for the 15-4 game three win.

UCLA sprinted out to leads of 5-0 and 9-1 in the fourth game, thanks in part to three hitting errors by the Bears in the first four rallies. From there, UCLA widened the gap to 12-4 before a Cal timeout spurred a Golden Bear rally. With Alicia Perry back to serve, the Bruins contributed three straight errors and helped Cal to close the gap to 13-7 before UCLA head coach Andy Banachowski called his first timeout of the game. From there, the Bruins earned a final sideout, putting Fendrick back to serve. Two straight block assists by Ashley Bowles and Bachman followed by Fendrick's seventh service ace of the match closed it out for the Bruins

It was a record-filled evening for the Bruins as Bachman recorded her 1,000th career kill in the first game of the match and her 500th career block on the next to last rally of the match. The match ended with Fendrick's seventh service ace, setting a new UCLA record for a four-game match.

Porter led all players with 17 kills in the match, with Fendrick and Bachman checking in with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Fendrick was the only Bruin to double-double, pairing her 13 kills with 11 digs.
