WESTWOOD - The fifth-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team dropped a five-game match to Oregon State on Thursday night in Pauley Pavilion, game scores were 4-15, 15-10, 7-15, 15-13, 16-14. It was the first-ever victory for the Beavers against UCLA, and it improves Oregon State to 11-3 overall, 3-1 Pac-10. UCLA falls to 9-4, 4-1 Pac-10.
The Bruins cruised through the first game of the match, holding Oregon State to a team hitting percentage of -.059 and downing six blocks. The Beavers regrouped in the second game, coming back from a 10-5 deficit to score the last 10 points of the game.
After the break, UCLA stormed out of the locker room and posted a team hitting percentage of .571, compared to the .191 compiled by Oregon State. The Bruins took the game by a 15-7 margin, and headed into game four looking to wrap up the match.
The fourth game became knotted at 10-10, and 22 sideouts followed before the game was decided. OSU took its first lead at 13-12 and increased its lead to 14-12 before a Bruin sideout. Behind the service of Michelle Quon, Kristee Porter swung to bring the Bruins within one (14-13), then swung again on the next rally to tie the score. The ball hit the floor in bounds, but Porter was called for a net violation, sideout Beavers. That sideout gave OSU its fourth game point, and they converted for a 15-13 fourth game win.
Game five was close the whole way with neither team holding more than a one-point lead until a Porter kill gave UCLA an 11-9 lead. Porter then had another kill to make it 12-9 before three straight Oregon State points tied it back up at 12-12. With her 29th kill of the match, Porter gave the Bruins a 13-12 lead. Two straight points for the Beavers gave them match point at 14-13, but Porter's 30th kill tied it back up at 14-14 before Angie Shirley and Gina Schmidt connected on consecutive kills for the 16-14 game and match victory.
It was the first career double-double for Bruin senior Elisabeth Bachman, who posted 12 kills and 11 total blocks (two solo blocks, nine block assists). Kristee Porter, Lauren Fendrick and Erika Selsor also double-doubled in the match, as Fendrick had 11 kills and 10 digs, Selsor had 69 assists and 12 digs, and Porter recorded her 11th career 30-kill match and third such milestone this season to go along with 16 digs and four blocks.
Junior outside hitter Ashley Bowles entered the Oregon State match needing 20 kills to reach 1,000 for her career. She finished the match with 19, and will need just one kill to reach that milestone on Friday night against Oregon.
