GREENSBORO, N.C. - The 2014 AT&T Winter National Championships got underway on Wednesday with a pair of relay races, as UCLA finished second and fifth in the 200 Medley Relay and sixth in the 800 Freestyle Relay.
The opening race of the meet saw the Bruins post the second-best time, as junior Katie Kinnear, seniors Jessica Khojasteh and Noelle Tarazona and sophomore Linnea Mack swam a 1:38.65, just .59 behind first place. Mack's anchor split of 21.81 tied Ting Quah for the fastest school split. The UCLA B team of sophomore Madison White, senior Taylor Carlson and freshmen Katie Grover and Sarah Kaunitz were fifth with a time of 1:39.97.
In the 800 Free Relay, the Bruin A team consisted of junior Katy Campbell and seniors Ally Loper, Tarazona and Monica Dornick, who swam a 7:10.94. The Bruin B squad of freshman MK Kish, Grover, White and freshman Anna Quinn were 12th (7:19.74).
On Thursday, there will be three individual events, the 500 Free, 200 Individual Medley and 50 Free, and one relay, the 400 Medley. Campbell, Dornick, Loper and Quinn will take part in the 500 Free. In the 200 IM, the Bruins will be represented by Tarazona and junior Arlyn Upshaw. Six Bruins will swim in the 50 Free, Dornick, Grover, Kaunitz, Kinnear, Mack and freshman Maddy Burnham. The Bruins will have two teams in the 400 Medley Relay.
