EUGENE, Ore. - Junior Jordan Anderson had a season-high 25 kills, as the 10th-ranked Bruins came back late in all three sets they won on Friday night in a four-set victory at #25 Oregon at Matthew Knight Arena. Set scores were 25-22, 19-25, 28-26, 29-27.
The Bruins won their sixth in a row to improve to 16-3 overall, 7-2 in Pac-12 play and 12-0 in matches away from Westwood, while the Ducks fell to 10-8 and 4-5 in league.
Sophomore Reily Buechler notched her third double-double of the season with 11 kills and 12 digs. Junior Claire Felix added nine kills and four blocks, while junior Jennie Frager posted five kills and eight blocks. In just two sets, freshman Kyra Rogers tied a career high with six kills and had a personal-best four blocks, while redshirt junior Haley Lawless had four kills.
Freshman Zana Muno replaced an injured Ryann Chandler at setter in the first set and finished with her team-best sixth double-double of the year, tallying a season-best 48 assists and 11 digs. In the backcourt, junior Taylor Formico registered a season-high 26 digs, senior Karly Drolson added seven and senior Rachel Inouye posted five. The Bruins hit .234 for the match.
The Bruins trailed by as much as eight at 11-3 before ending the first set on a 22-11 run to win the opener in comeback fashion. With UCLA trailing by its biggest deficit, the visitors scored six of seven on three Anderson kills and three Oregon errors to cut it to 12-9. The Ducks bumped their lead back up to six at 18-12, but the Bruins finished the first on a 13-4 run to take it.
Four straight on two Buechler kills, an Oregon error and a Felix kill made it 18-16. The Ducks still led by four at 22-18, but the Bruins scored the last seven of the set to take it 25-22. After a Duck service error, a Frager kill and four in a row by Anderson gave the Bruins a pair of set points. The first finished with a Frager/Lawless block to give the Bruins the three-point win. Anderson had nine kills in the first, as the Bruins out-hit the Ducks .208 to .146. Defensively, Formico posted 12 digs, Buechler added seven and Drolson and Muno recorded four apiece.
UCLA's biggest lead of the second was just one, as Oregon evened the match. The Bruins led 1-0 and 2-1, but the Ducks came back with five of six to go ahead 6-3. UCLA got to within one at both 6-5 and 7-6, but could not even the score. The Ducks' biggest lead was six on several occasions, as they won the second 25-19. Anderson led the Bruins with five kills, while Buechler and Lawless added three each, as the Bruins were out-hit .407 to .188.
The Bruins saved three Oregon set points and came back again to win the third set. Oregon lost the first two points of the third, but came back with six in a row to take a four-point lead. The Ducks' largest lead was seven at 18-11 before the Bruins began their comeback. Five straight kills by Buechler, Muno, Felix, Anderson and Felix again got the Bruins to within two at 18-16.
Down 21-18, back-to-back Anderson kills made it a one-point difference. The Bruins trailed by two at 24-22, but saved both set points on a Rogers kill and an Oregon attack error to make it 24-all. The Ducks had a third set point, but a Felix kill and a Felix/Muno roof gave the Bruins their first set point. Oregon saved it, but an Anderson kill and an attack error by the Ducks gave the Bruins the third set, 28-26. Anderson had six kills and no errors in 15 attempts, Felix added four with no errors in six swings and Rogers posted three. Formico had five digs and Frager notched three blocks, as the Bruins out-hit the Ducks .348 to .240.
UCLA made another comeback in the fourth to finish the match. The Bruins led 8-6 before the Ducks went on a 6-2 run to go ahead 12-10. Oregon saw its lead grow to as much as seven at 22-15 before UCLA staged another comeback. Six straight on a UO attack error, back-to-back Anderson kills, a Frager solo block, a Frager/Rogers roof and a Frager kill cut the deficit to one at 22-21.
After a Duck sideout, an Anderson kill and back-to-back kills by Rogers gave the Bruins a match point, but Oregon scored the next two to earn a set point. A Frager kill saved that attempt, but Oregon would have a second set point. However, a Duck attack error thwarted that. Another attack error gave the Bruins a second match point, but the Ducks saved it. An ill-timed Oregon service error gave the Bruins a third match point, and it was the charm, as Anderson finished off the Ducks with her 25th kill to win the fourth 29-27. Anderson had five kills in the fourth, Buechler added four, Frager notched three kills and three blocks and Rogers posted three kills. Formico picked up eight more digs and Muno had four, as the Bruins were out-hit .208 to .184.
The Bruins continue their road trip at Oregon State on Sunday at 12 p.m. A live video stream of the match can be found on UCLABruins.com.
