
Bruins' Streak Snapped in Seattle

SEATTLE - Sophomore Reily Buechler had her second straight double-double with 17 kills and 12 digs, redshirt sophomore Jessyka Ngauamo came off the bench to produce a career-best 12 kills and freshman Zana Muno notched her third straight double-double with 37 assists and 16 digs, but the eighth-ranked Bruins saw their eight-match winning streak come to an end in a four-set loss at #5 Washington on Sunday. Set scores were 20-25, 26-24, 15-25, 20-25.
The Bruins fall to 18-4 overall and 9-3 in Pac-12 play, while the Huskies improve to 20-2 and 10-2 in league action.
Junior Taylor Formico notched 19 digs and seven assists, senior Karly Drolson posted 11 digs and senior Rachel Inouye added nine digs. Junior Jennie Frager recorded six kills and four blocks, junior Claire Felix had five kills and freshman Kyra Rogers registered four kills in two sets. The Bruins hit .156 for the match.
The Bruins had an early 4-2 lead in the opening set on kills by Frager, Buechler and Felix and a Washington attack error, but the Huskies came back with three straight and didn't trail for the rest of the set. UCLA was within two at 14-12, but five straight put the home team ahead 19-12. The Bruins could not get within four the rest of the way, falling 25-20 in the first. Buechler had four kills and six digs in the opener, while Ngauamo posted three. Formico added five digs and Muno had four, as the Bruins were out-hit .257 to .057.
The second set featured 16 ties and seven lead changes, but the Bruins rallied to even the match. Equal at 14, the Bruins scored three in a row on two Washington errors and a Felix/Ngauamo block to take a set-best lead of 17-14. The Bruins still led by three at 19-16 before the Huskies scored five of six to go ahead 21-20. At 22-21 UW, a service error and an Inouye ace put the Bruins back up by one.
Washington recorded the next two points to earn a set point, but the Bruins got the last three on kills by Buechler and Muno and a Husky attack error to give UCLA the 26-24 win. Buechler again led the Bruins with five kills, adding four digs, while Ngauamo had four kills. UCLA had a great defensive set, with Drolson and Formico each posting five digs and Inouye and Muno both notching four. The Bruins were out-hit .229 to .208.
The Bruins were never in the third set, dropping the first five points, seven of eight and 11 of 13. Washington got its lead to double figures for the first time at 13-3. At 21-11, the Bruins scored four straight on a Ngauamo kill, a solo Felix block and two Washington errors, but the Huskies got the final four of the third to win it 25-15. Ngauamo had four of the Bruins' nine kills in the set, as UCLA was out-hit .189 to .070. Formico added seven digs and Inouye posted four.
UCLA also got off to a slow start in set four and never led. Washington scored nine of the first 12 and never looked back. The Huskies' biggest lead was six on several occasions. At 21-15, kills by Ngauamo and Rogers and a Muno ace made it 21-18, but the Bruins could get no closer than three. Washington won the fourth 25-20. Buechler led the Bruins with seven kills, while Rogers added four. Muno had five digs and the Bruins were out-hit .447 to .294.
The Bruins begin a four-match homestand on Wednesday against Colorado at 7:30 p.m. at Pauley Pavilion. The match will air on Pac-12 Networks.
