LOS ANGELES - The sixth-ranked Bruins had three pitchers combine on a four-hitter and a three-run error by San Diego State broke a fifth-inning tie, as UCLA defeated the Aztecs 4-1 on Sunday at the So Cal Collegiate Classic at Easton Stadium.
Junior Paige McDuffee started and tossed two scoreless innings, striking out one and giving up two hits. Freshman Johanna Grauer relieved McDuffee and picked up her first collegiate victory, fanning one in three innings and giving up an unearned run, two hits and one walk. Freshman Selina Ta'amilo recorded her first career save with two hitless innings, striking out three. The Bruins had four hits, with junior Allexis Bennett recording a pair.
The Bruins scored in the first without the benefit of a hit. Senior Ally Carda drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a sacrifice by sophomore Delaney Spaulding. After a walk to sophomore Gabrielle Maurice, junior Brittany Moeai hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Carda with the game's first run.
In the fourth, an unearned run tied the game. Lorena Bauer singled up the middle to open the frame, and was pinch-run for by Victoria Kobold, who moved to second on a passed ball and scores two outs later on a single to right-center by Jaylene Ignacio to even the score.
In the fifth, a fortuitous error gave the Bruins a lead. Senior Gracie Goulder and Bennett led off the inning with back-to-back, infield singles and both runners moved up on a sacrifice from Carda. One out later, Maurice walked to load the bases. That brought up Moeai, who hit a line drive to Aztec right fielder Kayla Jordan that went off her glove and to the wall, as all three runners came home to give the Bruins a 4-1 lead.
The Bruins travel to Sin City for next weekend's Wilson/DeMarini Desert Classic. UCLA will play four times on the UNLV campus against Northwestern (9 a.m.) and New Mexico (1:30 p.m.) on Friday, Feb. 13, Hawai'i on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 6 p.m. and Boise State on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 11:15 a.m. The Bruins will also play Utah State on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 11:15 a.m. at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park in Henderson, Nev.
