LOS ANGELES - The 13th-ranked Bruins closed out the weekend with a pair of six-inning victories on Sunday, defeating UC Davis 10-2 and Providence 8-0 to finish the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament with a 6-0 record.
In game one, UCLA (22-5) had nine hits, as senior Gracie Goulder, junior Allexis Bennett and freshmen Maddy Jelenicki and Kylee Perez all had two, with Goulder and Jelenicki each driving in four.
In the circle, freshman Selina Ta'amilo (4-1) struck out five in six innings, giving up two runs, five hits and two walks. She had a 1-2-3 inning in the sixth and struck out a pair in the third.
UC Davis (9-13) netted the game's first run in the second, loading the bases on walks to Amy Nunez and Krista Bava and a hit by pitch of Katie Robertson. One out later, Alexandra Sotomayor lifted a sacrifice fly to right-center to plate Nunez to put the Aggies up.
The Bruins responded with two in their half of the second. With one out and one on, Jelenicki hit her third home run of the season out to left to put the home team ahead 2-1.
UCLA tacked on single runs in the third and fourth. Sophomore Delaney Spaulding opened the third with a homer to left, her fourth of the season, to make it 3-1. In the fourth, Goulder launched a two-out bomb to center, her first of the year, to increase the edge to 4-1.
The Aggies played some long ball of their own in the fifth to cut their deficit to 4-2 when Alexis Carney left the yard.
But the Bruins bounced back with four in the fifth and two in the sixth to invoke the mercy rule. Perez led off with a single in the fifth and moved to second on a sacrifice by junior Brittany Moeai, which was followed by back-to-back walks to senior Stephany LaRosa and sophomore Gabrielle Maurice to load the bases.
Jelenicki doubled down the right-field line to bring in Perez and LaRosa to extend the lead to 6-2. Goulder then tapped one to second, which drove in Maurice with the Bruins' seventh run. An infield single to short by Bennett would score Jelenicki to give UCLA an 8-2 lead.
In the sixth, Perez again led things off, this time with a double to right-center. One out later, LaRosa walked for the fourth time in the game and was pinch-run for by senior Sam Duran. One out later, Jelenicki walked to load the bases and Goulder singled up the middle to score Perez and Duran to finish up a 10-2 victory.
In game two versus Providence (1-8), senior Ally Carda (11-3) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, settling for a one-hitter with nine strikeouts. She allowed just two baserunners, giving up a walk in the second and a sixth-inning, two-out single. Carda had 1-2-3 frames in the first, third, fourth and fifth and struck out a pair in the second, fifth and sixth and one apiece in the first, third and fourth.
At the dish, the Bruins (23-5) had 11 hits, as Bennett posted three of them with three runs scored and two stolen bases. Carda added two hits and two RBI, while Spaulding recorded two hits.
The Bruins got on the board in the third. With one out, Bennett singled to left, stole second and scored on a Carda double to left-center.
In the fourth, UCLA added another run when LaRosa belted her fourth homer of the year, a towering shot to left, to make it 2-0.
The Bruins' run in the fifth inning was very similar to the third, as it started with a Bennett leadoff single and a stolen base. After she moved to third on a Carda grounder to the right side, Spaulding singled to right to put the Bruins up 3-0.
UCLA made it a pair of mercy-rule wins with five in the sixth. Moeai led off with a pinch-hit double to right-center and advanced to third on a fielding error by center fielder Kiki Baldassari. After a walk to Maurice, who then stole second, junior Mysha Sataraka doubled to left-center to score Moeai and Maurice to extend the lead to 5-0.
With senior Jessica Amaral running for Sataraka, Bennett singled to right-center one out later to bring her in with UCLA's sixth run, as Bennett took second on the throw. She would advance to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single through the 3-4 hole by Carda to make it 7-0. With senior Kaelin Sprawls running for Carda, the bases would become loaded following walks to Spaulding and Perez, which brought up Jelenicki, who launched a deep fly ball to left-center just shy of being a grand slam. She would settle for a 200-foot single and an RBI to score Sprawls and end the eight-run victory.
The Bruins continue their homestand on Tuesday at Easton Stadium with a matchup against ninth-ranked Baylor at 5 p.m. The game will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
