LONG BEACH, Calif. - Redshirt junior Haley Lawless posted a career-best 15 kills to go with five blocks, while junior Jennie Frager added a personal-high nine roofs with four kills, as the 14th-ranked Bruins wrapped up non-conference play with a four-set victory at Long Beach State on Friday night. Set scores were 25-20, 19-25, 25-17, 25-14.

The Bruins won their eighth in a row to bring a 9-1 record into Pac-12 Conference play, while the 49ers fall to 9-3.

For the fifth straight match, junior Jordan Anderson led the Bruins in kills with 16, adding four digs. Sophomore Reily Buechler was also in double figures with 12 kills and one dig shy of a double-double with nine. Freshman Zana Muno did get her double-double, her team-best fifth of the season, posting 25 assists and 17 digs. Junior Taylor Formico had 12 digs, senior Rachel Inouye added nine, senior Karly Drolson recorded four and redshirt sophomore Ryann Chandler notched 17 assists and four digs, as the Bruins hit .280 for the evening.

Despite three ties, the Bruins never trailed in the opening set. UCLA broke out to a 6-0 lead thanks to the play of Anderson, who had three kills and teamed up with Frager on a block for the first four points, with two Long Beach errors making the run a half dozen. With the Bruins up 8-2, the 49ers stormed back with six straight and were also tied at nine and 10.

However, five in a row on kills by Buechler and Chandler and three 49er errors put the Bruins back up by a handful. The Bruins' biggest lead of the set was six on several occasions. UCLA led 22-19 and scored three of the last four points, including two kills from Buechler, to win the first 25-20. Anderson and Buechler each had four kills, as the Bruins out-hit the 49ers .250 to .049.

After never trailing in set one, the Bruins never led in set two. Long Beach jumped out to an 8-4 lead, but three in a row for UCLA on kills by Buechler and Lawless and a 49er attack error cut the deficit to one. Long Beach State immediately got its lead back up to five at 15-10 before back-to-back Anderson kills cut it to three.

But UCLA could get no closer. Long Beach State's largest lead of the set was seven at 23-16, as the home team won the second 25-19. Anderson and Lawless both had five kills in the second. Inouye added five digs. The Bruins were out-hit .229 to .146.

The Bruins only trailed once in set three at 3-2, which was followed by a 3-0 run on an Anderson kill, a Buechler/Frager block and an LBSU attack error to make it 5-3. At 9-8, two more 49er errors and an Anderson kill put the visitors up 12-8. UCLA led 12-10 when it went on a 9-2 run to break it open. The Bruins benefitted from five LBSU errors and also had Lawless contribute on three points with two kills and a block to make it 21-12.

UCLA's lead remained between six and eight for the rest of the set, as the Bruins won the third 25-17. Anderson (five), Lawless (four) and Buechler (three) combined for all 12 kills in the set for UCLA, which out-hit Long Beach State .370 to .086. Muno added five digs.

The Bruins were behind 7-5 in set four, but used runs of 5-0 and 9-2 to bust it open. Two Buechler kills, an LBSU attack error, a combo block by Lawless and junior Claire Felix and a Frager kill made it 10-7. Long Beach scored two of the next three, but back-to-back attack errors and a Buechler ace increased the lead to 14-9.

At 15-12, the Bruins closed out the match on a 10-2 run. Six straight on two Lawless kills, one each by Anderson and Muno and two errors made it 21-12. After a sideout, a Lawless kill and back-to-back roofs by Frager and Lawless gave the Bruins 11 match points. On the second attempt, a Buechler kill finished off the 25-14 victory. Lawless paced the Bruins with five kills in the fourth, while Buechler added four. Muno tallied 10 digs. The Bruins out-hit the 49ers .406 to .146.

The Bruins host USC on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Pauley Pavilion. The match will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks and will also feature free audio and live stats at UCLABruins.com.
