LOS ANGELES, Calif. – UCLA freshman Emma Schanz completed the sweep of the Bay Area teams in the 200 Breaststroke when she posted the top time in the event on Saturday against Cal. Schanz swam an NCAA B qualifying time of 2:14.31 to win by more than two seconds.

"I was really happy with the results," said Schanz of the back-to-back wins in the 200 Breast. "I've been trying to work on my technique a lot more. I've been working on holding my under-waters longer and picking up my tempo more. And Cyndi (Gallagher) talks to me a lot about staying in my own lane and not worrying who's in the lane next to me.
"Facing Stanford and Cal, there are some really big names out there—a lot of Olympians," said Schanz of the stiff competition. "I knew this weekend was going to be a challenge, and I usually let things get into my head. But these meets, I focused on staying in my own lane and racing how I know how to race. I think it worked out pretty well."
Schanz nabbed the Bruins' only swimming wins against the Bay Area teams. She also finished second in the 100 Breaststroke, losing by a mere .05 seconds to Cal's Marina Garcia Urzainqui.
Several more Bruins posted second-place finishes on the day. Katie Grover swam the second-best time in the 200 Freestyle (1:50.88), while Linnea Mack posted a 53.87 in the 100 Backstroke and Madison White posted an NCAA B qualifying time (1:57.08) in the 200 Backstroke. Michaela Merlihan swam a 4:58.90 in the 500 Freestyle to finish second. In the 200 Butterfly, Katie Kinnear and Arlyn Upshaw went 2, 3, as did Upshaw and Schanz in the 400 IM.
On the boards, Eloise Belanger broke another 1-meter event meet record. The freshman dethroned former Bruin Emma Ivory-Ganja. Belanger's 302.40 bested the previous record of 287.40—set by Ivory-Ganja at Cal in 2013—by 15 points.
Annika Lenz, Kat Friese, and Montana Monahan recorded top-five finishes in the 1-meter event as well. Lenz placed third with a 277.13, followed by Friese in fourth (257.55) and Monahan in fifth (245.10).
On the 3-meter, Lenz and Friese went 3, 4 again—Lenz scored a 277.73 with Friese close behind at 276.08.
