KOHALA, HAWAI'I - Two Bruins are in the top 10 after a busy day of 36 holes of golf at the Nanea Pac-12 Preview, as sophomore Bethany Wu is solo fifth, while freshman Mariel Galdiano is tied for eighth. As a team, top-ranked UCLA shot a pair of 14-over scores of 306 on Monday at the Nanea Golf Club. The Bruins are tied for seventh (+28, 612) heading into Tuesday's final round.
Wu will begin her final round two shots back of the individual lead at 1-under 145 following scores of 72 (-1) and 73 (E). In her first round, beginning on the second hole for the shotgun start, she bogeyed #3 and #4 before getting back into red figures with birdies at #9, #11 and #13. A bogey on #15 and a birdie on #18 concluded her opening round at 1-under. Wu was hot to start the second round with birdies on #5, #7 and #10, but gave those three strokes back with a double and a bogey on #11 and #12. A bogey on #16 and a birdie on #18 gave her an even-par total on her second trip around Nanea.
Galdiano rebounded from an opening-round 75 (+2) with a 1-under 72 in the afternoon, putting her at 1-over 147. Opening on the third hole, she was 4-over before making birdies on #13 and #1 to finish her first 18 at 2-over. Galdiano got back to even par with birdies on the fourth and the sixth. She lost those two shots on #10 and #15, but a birdie on her final hole of the day (#2) put her back in red numbers on her second round.
Senior Hadas Libman, junior Joo Seo and sophomore Lilia Vu are all tied for 50th at +15 (161). Libman had one birdie on her first 18 on the 13th to go with three bogeys, a double and a triple for an opening-round 80 (+7). She had a pair of birdies in the afternoon on the eighth and 18th, adding eight bogeys and a double bogey for an 8-over 81. Seo, playing as an individual, opened with an 83 (+10) in her first round as a Bruin with five bogeys, a double and a triple bogey. In round two, she made her lone birdie of the day on the ninth to go with four bogeys and a double for a 5-over 78. Vu shot an opening-round 81 (+8) and a second-round 80 (+7). She made three birdies in her first 18 on holes #6, #17 and #18, but also had two bogeys, two doubles and a quintuple bogey. Vu posted five bogeys and a double in her second round. Freshman Clare Legaspi posted rounds of 79 (+6) and 86 (+13) and is tied for 60th (+19, 165). She birdied her final hole of the first round, the third, adding seven bogeys. In her second round, Legaspi had 11 bogeys and a double.
The final round will be another shotgun start, beginning at 7:30 a.m. HT/10:30 a.m. PT in the order of Wu, Galdiano, Vu, Libman and Legaspi on holes #6-#10. Seo will start on the 16th. Live scoring will be available here.
