PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. - The Bruins have the first of two straight trips to Northern California in the next two weeks, taking part in the Cypress Point Classic at the Cypress Point Club. The tournament is a Ryder Cup style format and will be played on Monday and Tuesday.
The teams embarking on the Cypress Point Club along with the Bruins and host and #7 Stanford are #8 Wake Forest, #11 USC, #15 Georgia, Georgia Tech, Alabama and California. Each team will compete with six players, playing 54 holes over the two days. Day one on Monday will feature two separate rounds, four-ball best-ball and foursomes. Day two will be singles match play. Live scoring will not be available for any of the rounds.
Four points will be available per match, with one point awarded for both the front-nine and back-nine matches, and two points for the overall match. Each match will be played over 18 holes under format during that round. The total number of holes won by each side over the full 18 holes will settle ties. Teams with the highest point total at the end of each round will advance in the bracket.
In the first round of the tournament (four-ball), the Bruins, the #7 seed, will square off with second-seeded Wake Forest. The top seed for the tournament is host Stanford, which will play California. #4-seed Georgia and #5-seed Georgia Tech and #3-seed USC and #6-seed Alabama round out the opening groupings. Winners will go forward in the championship bracket, while losers will move to the consolation bracket. Each team will be guaranteed three matches and the lineup order will remain the same throughout the event.
In Monday's four-ball, sophomore Matt Hutchins and freshman Hidetoshi Yoshihara will be paired together and will take on Wake Forest's Cameron Young and Lee Detmer at 8:36 a.m. Junior Tyler Collier and sophomore Patrick Murphy will tangle with Paul McBride and Clancy Waugh at 8:48 a.m., while sophomore Cole Madey and freshman Spencer Soosman will take on Eric Bae and Will Zalatoris at 9 a.m.
The Bruins are playing in their third fall tournament after posting a third-place finish at the Marquette Intercollegiate (Oct. 2-3) and a 14th-place showing at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate (Oct. 21-23). Next week, the fall slate concludes as UCLA hosts the Gifford Collegiate in Napa, Calif.
