PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. - The Bruins, seeded seventh in the Cypress Point Classic at the Cypress Point Club, went 1-1 on day one, upsetting #2-seed Wake Forest 7.5-4.5 on Monday morning, while losing on a tiebreaker to #3-seed USC on Monday afternoon.
The Ryder Cup style format saw each team compete with six players, with day one featuring four-ball best-ball in round one and foursomes in round two. Four points were available for each match, with one point awarded for both the front-nine and back-nine matches, and two points for the overall match. Each match was played over 18 holes. The total number of holes won by each side over the full 18 holes settled ties, which came into effect for the Bruins in the afternoon versus the Trojans.
The first match in the Bruins' contest with Wake Forest featured sophomore Cole Madey and freshman Spencer Soosman against Will Zalatoris and Eric Bae. Madey and Soosman earned a point by winning the front nine and Zalatoris and Bae won the back nine, with each team winning the same number of holes overall to split the remaining two points. Next up were junior Tyler Collier and sophomore Patrick Murphy versus Clancy Waugh and Paul McBride. The two pairs split the front side to each receive a half-point, but Collier and Murphy claimed the back nine and the additional two points for the overall match. The final matchup featured sophomore Matt Hutchins and freshman Hidetoshi Yoshihara against Lee Detmer and Cameron Young, and just like the first match, all four points were halved. Detmer/Young won the front and Hutchins/Yoshihara took the back, with each team winning the same number of holes.
The Bruins advanced in the winner's bracket to take on USC in afternoon foursomes. Madey and Soosman earned three of the four points against Rico Hoey and Cheng Jin, winning the back nine and the overall match. Collier and Murphy lost all four points to Sean Crocker and Jonah Texeira, while Hutchins and Yoshihara, with a win on the front nine and two points for the overall, claimed three of four points against Andrew Levitt and Justin Suh. The final score would be 6-6, but USC won more holes to advance to the championship. The Bruins fell to the third-place match, where they will take on Stanford in singles play on Tuesday.
