LOS ANGELES -ย Junior Reily Buechler hit a season-best .571 with 12 kills and no errors in 21 attempts to go with four digs and three blocks, as the 18th-ranked Bruins swept Arizona State on Friday at Pauley Pavilion. Set scores were 25-23, 25-12, 25-22.
ย
The Bruins (12-3, 3-2 Pac-12) hit .253 for the match behind the setting of freshman Kylie Miller (18 assists, seven digs) and junior Ryann Chandler (12 assists, six digs). Chandler also tied a career high with three service aces. Senior Taylor Formico added 13 digs and seven assists, while senior Jordan Anderson posted nine kills. Freshman Torrey Van Winden had eight kills, senior Claire Felix recorded four kills and five blocks and sophomore Zana Muno notched four kills, four digs and three blocks.
ย
The first set featured seven ties and four lead changes, as the Bruins came back to win the opener. Arizona State (7-11, 0-6 Pac-12) jumped out to a 6-2 lead before the Bruins went on a 9-3 run to go ahead 11-9. Buechler was a part of five of the points on three kills, a solo block and a combo stuff. Arizona State responded to go back ahead by a score of 13-11 before the Bruins scored three in a row on two Anderson kills and one by Felix to take a 14-13 edge. Despite two more ties, the Bruins didn't trail for the rest of the set, seeing their lead reach as many as three. At 23-all, kills by Felix and Anderson wrapped up a 25-23 win. Anderson recorded a team-high seven kills, Felix added four, Buechler notched three kills and four digs and Formico had five digs, as the Bruins were out-hit .158 to .143.
ย
It was all Bruins in set two. Even at one, the only tie of the set, UCLA scored four in a row and 16 of 19 to take a set-best lead of 13 at 17-4. The Bruins had seven blocks in the second set, with Felix recording three block assists and senior Jennie Frager notching two solos and a block assist. UCLA's lead stayed in double figures for the rest of the set, as the home team won 25-12. Buechler led the Bruins with four kills, while Van Winden added three. Formico notched six digs. The Bruins hit .350 and held the Sun Devils to a -.138 percentage.
ย
The third set featured five ties and three lead changes. Down 4-3, the Bruins scored the next two on a Buechler kill and a Chandler ace and didn't trail for the rest of the set. At 10-9, five in a row on two kills and a solo block by Van Winden, a Felix solo stuff and an ASU attack error brought the lead to a set-best six at 15-9. The closest Arizona State would get the rest of the way was two. Van Winden's fifth kill of the third finished off the 25-22 win. Buechler also had five kills, while Muno added three, as the Bruins out-hit the Sun Devils .333 to .143.
