LOS ANGELES -ย Senior Taylor Formico paced the Bruin defense with 27 digs and junior Reily Buechler posted a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs, the latter of which tied a career high, as ninth-ranked UCLA swept Oregon State on Wednesday at Pauley Pavilion. Set scores were 25-22, 25-14, 25-16.
ย
UCLA (22-5, 13-4 Pac-12) had a season-best nine service aces, including two by Formico and senior Jordan Anderson, who added nine kills. Junior Ryann Chandler and freshman Kylie Miller each had similar lines of 17 assists, seven digs and one assist, while freshman Torrey Van Winden recorded nine kills and seven digs. Sophomore Kyra Rogers had five kills, senior Claire Felix added four kills and five blocks and senior Jennie Frager tallied four kills. The Bruins hit .177 for the match.
ย
The Bruins trailed just once in the opening set. UCLA jumped out to a 5-1 lead thanks to a Chandler ace, a Van Winden/Frager block, an OSU attack error, an Anderson kill and a Van Winden ace. Oregon State (11-17, 4-13 Pac-12) came back with six of seven to go ahead 7-6, but the lead was short-lived, as kills by Frager and Buechler and a Beaver attack error put the Bruins up for good. Even at 11, the Bruins scored six of eight, with Van Winden providing three kills during the run. UCLA raised its lead to a set-best five at 24-19, and lost its first three set points, but a Van Winden kill closed out the 25-22 victory. Van Winden was error-free with five kills in 10 attempts in the opener, Buechler added three kills and seven digs and Anderson posted three kills. Formico notched 12 of her 27 digs in the opening set. The Bruins were out-hit .167 to .146.
ย
Oregon State scored the first two points of set two, but kills by the law firm of Anderson, Buechler and Frager gave UCLA a lead. The Beavers netted the next two to go ahead again, but an OSU attack error and an Anderson ace put the Bruins on top 5-4. Despite a tie at five, the Bruins rattled off the next five points to begin their runaway victory, as Rogers had two kills, Buechler and Felix teamed up for a block, Miller served an ace and OSU committed an error. At 16-12, the Bruins scored nine of the last 11 of the second to win it 25-14. Five different players had points during the run, including Frager, who had a kill and a solo stuff, and Buechler, who posted two kills, including the set-clincher. Formico added nine more digs in the second, Buechler had four kills and five digs and Felix and Rogers each recorded three kills. The Bruins out-hit the Beavers .262 to .049.
ย
The Beavers led by as many as three in set three before the Bruins again pulled away to finish off the sweep. Trailing 7-5, the Bruins scored five straight on two OSU errors, a Van Winden/Felix block and kills from Van Winden and Buechler. At 15-13, a 9-1 run broke it open. The first four points came on a Felix solo stuff and three OSU errors to extend the advantage to six. After a sideout, a Buechler kill, a Van Winden solo block, a Buechler ace and back-to-back combo roofs from Felix and freshman Madeleine Gates made it 24-14. On their third set point, a Van Winden kill closed out the 25-16 victory. Buechler had six kills in the third, Anderson added five and Formico posted six digs, as the Bruins hit .118 to OSU's -.108.
ย
The Bruins, who regain first place in the Pac-12, a half game ahead of idle Washington, host #19 Oregon on Friday at the John Wooden Center at 7 p.m. Live audio and video will be available at UCLABruins.com.
