NAPA, Calif. - Freshman Spencer Soosman completed a 3-0 match play week on the final day of the Gifford Collegiate, while sophomore Cole Madey woke up early to finish and win his suspended Tuesday match, and then posted a big victory on Wednesday at the Silverado Resort and Spa.
First up, the Bruins were leading 3-2 against South Florida in the match play consolation when action was suspended due to darkness with two holes left for Madey and Claudio Correa. With Madey 1-up, both players stuck their second shots in close and made birdie to keep the score the same and send the match to the ninth, where each one made par to give UCLA the win and the 4-2 triumph over the Bulls, putting the Bruins in the fifth-place match against Colorado.
After a brief break following his first two holes of the day, Madey remained on fire versus the Buffaloes, never trailing in his match with Morten Toft Hansen. He won #11 before returning to all square on #12, but then claimed #13, #15, #17, #18 and #1 to build a 5-up lead. Madey lost the third, but won #4 and #5 to close out Hansen 6 and 4.
Soosman played a tight match with Yannik Paul that went the distance, with the Bruin freshman picking up the 1-up victory. Paul won #10, but Soosman took #11, as the next 11 holes were halved. On the fifth, Soosman holed out from the bunker to go 1-up, but lost the sixth and then was given a penalty for practice putting, giving Paul the seventh and putting Colorado 1-up. In a great act of sportsmanship, Paul then conceded the eighth hole on the green to turn the match all square to the ninth. Soosman would birdie the par 5 to give the Bruins their second point.
However, UCLA lost the other four matches to fall 4-2 to Colorado. Freshman Hidetoshi Yoshihara also went the distance, but fell 1-up to Jeremy Paul. Yoshihara didn't trail by more than one, but also never led in the match. He dropped the initial hole, #10, but won #14. Yoshihara lost #16, but drew even again with a win on the first. After seven halves in a row, Paul won the ninth to win the match. Sophomore Patrick Murphy never led in his match against Ethan Freeman, falling 3 and 1. Freeman won #12, #13 and #14 to take a 3-up lead to the front nine, where Murphy cut his deficit to 2-down at the third. Freeman went back to 3-up on the fifth, Murphy claimed the seventh and Freeman won #8 to take the match. Junior Tyler Collier fell 5 and 4 to John Souza. Collier's lone win was on the 15th, as Souza took six holes. Sophomore Matt Hutchins lost 6 and 4 to Spencer Painton.
The Bruins are done with fall golf and will resume competition Jan. 23-24 at the Arizona Intercollegiate at the Sewailo Golf Club.
