Bruins Battle Elements on Day One in Tucson

Battling gusty winds all day at the Sewailo Golf Club, the Bruins are in 11th place in the middle of round two at the Arizona Intercollegiate, which was suspended due to darkness just before 6 p.m. local time. UCLA shot a 306 (+22) as a team in its first 18 holes on Monday, ranking 12th following the morning round. The Bruins have improved one spot during the afternoon round, with their fivesome needing to complete a handful of holes on Tuesday morning.
 
Second-round play will resume at 7:45 a.m. MT, with the third round getting underway shortly thereafter. Live scoring will be available here.
 
Sophomore Cole Madey, starting on the fifth hole in Monday's shotgun start, made a pair of birdies on the seventh and 17th to go with four bogeys for an opening-round 73 (+2).
 
Junior Tyler Collier, opening on the seventh, shot a 4-over 75 in his first 18 holes. He birdied four holes, #8, #13, #14 and #17, adding three bogeys, one double and one triple bogey. Freshman Hidetoshi Yoshihara had an opening-round 78 (+7), making a birdie on the eighth, four bogeys and two doubles. Sophomore Phil Delisi shot an 80 (+9) in the morning. He had birdies on the first and eighth, five bogeys, a double and a quad. Junior Corey Shaun had an 83 (+12) in round one with seven bogeys, a double and a triple bogey.
 
Four more Bruins were in Tucson, taking part in the Arizona Medalist Intercollegiate, which featured 30 individual golfers. The tournament began with 18 holes on Sunday at Starr Pass Golf Club and 36 more on Monday.
 
Freshman Harrison Mahon held the solo lead after 18 holes and a share of the lead following 36. In round one, he made four birdies on the eighth, 12th, 13th and 16th, with just one bogey on the first, en route to a 3-under 68, which was two shots clear of the field. In the second round of the tournament and his first 18 holes on Monday, Mahon shot a 2-over 73 to move into a tie for first. He had a pair of birdies on the third and seventh to go with two bogeys and a double. However, Mahon faltered in his final round with a 12-over 83. His lone birdie came on his last hole, the 18th, adding six bogeys, two doubles and a triple. He finished the tournament in a tie for 10th (+11, 224).
 
Sophomore Matt Hutchins will be the top finisher for the Bruins, as he was fifth at 6-over (219). Hutchins was tied for sixth after his opening-round 73 (+2). He bounced back from a four bogeys in seven-hole stretch to finish his round with an eagle on the third hole. Hutchins had a flurry of birdies in Monday's first round, as he ended up shooting a 1-under 70 to move him into a tie for fifth. He made five birdies, including his last two holes, while also gaining strokes on #3, #11 and #13, adding four bogeys. Hutchins had a topsy-turvy final round, shooting a 5-over 76. He made an eagle (#15) and three birdies (#3, #8 and #16), coupled with five bogeys, a double and a triple bogey.
 
Sophomore Patrick Murphy tied for 16th (+20, 233). In round one, he shot a 3-over 74, making a pair of birdies on #13 and #15 to go with five bogeys. Murphy followed that with a 4-over 75 in Monday's first 18. He birdied the third and 17th, while making four bogeys and a double. In his final round, Murphy was +13 (84), with two birdies (#3 and #12), four bogeys, two doubles, a triple and a quad.
 
Freshman Scott Mitchell placed 24th (+25, 238). He made two birdies (#3, #14), four bogeys and two doubles in his opening-round 77 (+6). In Monday's first 18 of 36 holes, Mitchell made four birdies on the first, third, fourth and 17th to go with two bogeys, four doubles and two triples for an 83 (+12). The freshman shot a 7-over 78 in his final round. He made an eagle on the third and birdies on the fourth and 17th, adding two bogeys, three doubles and a triple bogey.
