TUCSON, Ariz. - The UCLA men's golf team begins the 2017 portion of their schedule on Monday with the Arizona Intercollegiate. The two-day tournament, which will feature 36 holes of action on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday, will be played at the Sewailo Golf Club's par-71, 7,262-yard layout.
The starting fivesome for the Bruins will be juniors Tyler Collier and Corey Shaun, sophomores Phil Delisi and Cole Madey and freshman Hidetoshi Yoshihara. Monday's rounds will begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start, followed by the final round on Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun. The low four of five scores will be counted for the team total. Joining the Bruins, ranked 37th in the latest Golfweek rankings (Jan. 19), in the 18-team field are host Arizona, #23 Texas A&M, #28 Oregon, #41 UTEP, #43 BYU, #46 New Mexico, #49 Washington, #50 Iowa State, California, Denver, Gonzaga, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, Pepperdine, South Dakota State, Southern Illinois and Washington State.
The Bruins have two third-place finishes in their three stroke play events this season, placing third at the season-opening Marquette Intercollegiate (Oct. 2-3), as well as at the last tournament of the fall, the Gifford Collegiate (Nov. 7-9).
Yoshihara leads the Bruins in scoring average at 70.4 and is coming off his best round to end the fall schedule, shooting a 6-under 66 in the second round of the Gifford Collegiate (Nov. 7) to tie for sixth in stroke play (-6, 138). He has a pair of under-par rounds on the season, firing a 2-under 68 in the second round of the Marquette Intercollegiate (Oct. 2), where he tied for 22nd (+4, 214).
Collier has a 71.6 scoring average in three events, tying for 15th at the Gifford Collegiate (-2, 142). He opened the season with a 2-under 68 in round one at the Marquette Intercollegiate and followed that with a 1-under 69, which are two of his four under-par rounds. Collier tied for fifth (-1, 209) at Marquette.
Madey holds a scoring average of 72.3 in three events, tying for 10th at Marquette (+1, 211) and tying for 18th at the Gifford (-1, 143). He has three under-par rounds, including second- and third-round 69s (-1) at Marquette and a second-round 70 (-2) at the Gifford.
Delisi has a scoring average of 74.4 in a pair of tournaments, tying for 32nd at the Marquette Intercollegiate (+9, 219) and tying for 45th at the Gifford Collegiate (+9, 153).
Shaun rejoins the Bruins' roster for the 2017 portion of the season. He appeared in five events in 2015-2016, posting a T-10 at the Amer Ari Invitational (Feb. 4-6, -6, 210).
