Bruins' Season Ends at Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -ย Senior Jordan Anderson recorded 16 kills and a .448 hitting percentage, while senior Taylor Formico added 22 digs, but the 10th-seeded Bruins saw their season come to an end in the NCAA Regional Final, as #2 Minnesota posted a sweep on Saturday at The Sports Pavilion. Set scores were 23-25, 20-25, 22-25.

Both Anderson and Formico were named to the Minneapolis All-Regional Team. Junior Reily Buechler registered her second double-double of the weekend with 13 kills and 12 digs. Senior Jennie Frager had six kills, freshman Torrey Van Winden posted seven digs, five kills and two aces, sophomore Kyra Rogers had five blocks and senior Claire Felix added four blocks. Senior Ryann Chandler notched 22 assists and seven digs, while freshman Kylie Miller had 13 assists and six digs. The Bruins (27-7) hit .146 for the match.

The Bruins were on fire to start the match, scoring the first six on an Anderson kill, a Van Winden ace, a solo stuff and back-to-back kills by Buechler and a Minnesota attack error. The Golden Gophers (29-4) trimmed their deficit to a pair at 9-7, but a 6-1 run on three Anderson kills, two Van Winden kills and a Minnesota attack error gave UCLA a set-best lead of seven at 15-8. The Bruins still led by three at 20-17 when the Gophers made their comeback, scoring the next four to take their first lead of the set. Despite ties at 21 and 22, the Bruins were unable to regain the lead, dropping the opener 25-23. Anderson led UCLA with seven kills, Buechler added six kills and four digs and Formico recorded four digs, as the Bruins were out-hit .270 to .205.

UCLA's only leads in set two were one-point edges at 2-1, 4-3 and 7-6. Seven in a row for the Golden Gophers gave the home team a 13-7 lead. Minnesota's largest advantage was eight at 18-10 before the Bruins began to rally, scoring 10 of 15 to cut their deficit to three at 23-20. Anderson and Buechler each had two kills during the 10-5 run, Frager and Van Winden added one each and also teamed up for a block and Minnesota committed three errors. But the Golden Gophers scored the next two to take the second 25-20. Buechler had four kills and four digs, Anderson added four kills, Frager notched three and Formico posted nine digs, as the Bruins were out-hit .273 to .156.

The Bruins held an early 4-2 lead in set three thanks to a Van Winden kill and ace, a Buechler kill and an Anderson ace. Minnesota scored the next five to take a three-point lead, but a 4-1 Bruin run on a Frager kill, a pair of Felix/Rogers blocks and a Gopher error evened things at eight. Minnesota again bounced right back with five in a row, but the Bruins didn't quit, scoring six of seven to tie it at 14. Anderson had three kills during the run, Felix and Frager each posted one and Felix and Rogers teamed up for another roof. UCLA would re-take the lead at 16-15 and led as late as 18-17, but a 5-2 Minnesota run gave the home team a 22-20 edge. After yet another Felix/Rogers block, the Golden Gophers ended the match on a 3-1 run to take the third 25-22. Anderson had five kills in the third, Buechler added three with four digs and Formico posted nine digs, as the Bruins were out-hit .160 to .083.
