SAN FRANCISCO - The Bruins were selected second in the 2016 Pac-12 Preseason Poll, as chosen by the league's coaches and announced by the conference on Wednesday. UCLA received one first-place vote and 103 points, trailing only Stanford, which picked up nine first-place votes and 119 points.
The Bruins are coming off a second-straight trip to the NCAA Regional Semifinals, going 25-8 and 14-6 (4th) in Pac-12 play in 2015. UCLA returns three All-Americans from last year's squad, all three of them leading a senior-laden team. Taylor Formico, the Pac-12 Libero of the Year in 2015, was a Third Team All-American, while Jordan Anderson and Claire Felix were Honorable Mention All-Americans.
Six Bruins were named to the All-Pac-12 Teams in 2015 and all of them are back. Joining First Teamer Anderson and Honorable Mention winners Felix and Formico are senior Jennie Frager, junior Reily Buechler and sophomore Zana Muno, who was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team. In addition to the 11 returning letterwinners, UCLA brings in five freshmen to round out the 2016 squad.
Along with the Preseason Poll, the conference announced the Preseason All-Pac-12 Team, which featured Anderson. The senior led the Bruins a year ago with 4.38 kills per set and 4.66 points per set, adding 0.91 digs per set and 0.40 blocks per set. In her junior campaign, she led UCLA in kills in 25 matches, recording 30 double-figure kill contests. On nine occasions, Anderson had at least 20 kills, including a season-best 25 against Oregon and Utah.
Following Stanford and UCLA in the Preseason Poll were Washington (3rd, one first-place vote, 99 points), Oregon (4th, 95), USC (5th, one first-place vote, 85), Arizona (6th, 72), Colorado (7th, 50), Utah (8th, 48), Washington State (9th, 46), California (10th, 27), Arizona State (11th, 26) and Oregon State (12th, 22).
The Bruins open up their 2016 season next Friday at the LMU Invitational, facing Niagara at 4 p.m. Live audio will be available at UCLABruins.com.
