Men's Soccer Downs CSUF 1-0 in Overtime
August 29, 2016 | Men's Soccer
Los Angeles, Calif. – No. 16 UCLA survived in overtime over visiting Cal State Fullerton, 1-0, thanks to a penalty kick goal by Brian Iloski in the 95th minute. The Titans (0-2) had easily outshot the Bruins (1-0-1) in each period of regulation and 14-7 overall, but a failure to convert chances and their foul in the penalty box proved to be costly.
"Tonight was not a good performance by our team," UCLA head coach Jorge Salcedo stated. "We weren't able to really execute anything we looked to do throughout the field. We did a poor job in our decision-making, our speed of play, our speed of thought was all off."
One area of strength for the Bruins, however, was at the goalkeeper position. Bruin goalkeeper Juan Cervantes earned the shutout with five saves in the contest, including a diving stop in the 34th minute on a shot by Ross McPhie and another point blank save on a shot by Mitchell Bell in the 40th minute. Cervantes had another memorable save in the 70th minute, stopping Robert Coronado.
With neither team being able to find the back of the net and time rapidly running out, both teams poured it on late in the second half to try to score the go-ahead goal. Bruin midfielder Jackson Yuiell sent a nice ball through to a streaking Jose Hernandez in the 83rd minute, but Fullerton goalkeeper Paul Andre Guerin beat Hernandez to the ball to snuff the scoring opportunity. Fullerton had two chances on counterattacks, but Ronaldo Pineda fired wide in the 86th, and Edgar Rodriguez shot way high in the 89th. The Bruins also had a good scoring opportunity in the box in the 89th minute, but Yueill's shot was deflected, giving Guerin an easy look for the save.
Yuiell was a difference-maker in the overtime period, pressuring the Titan defense with a shot 18 seconds into extra time and then drawing the penalty in the box at 94:30. Iloski stepped up to take the penalty, and he calmly hit the game-winner past Guerin, who guessed the wrong way.

"It was one of those nights where the opponent probably should have won the game," Salcedo admitted. "We were in many ways fortunate, but we know that those things at the end of the day sort themselves out. We've all been a part of games where you shouldn't win and you win or you shouldn't lose and you lose. Tonight was just one of those nights."
With the victory in hand, the Bruins will next take on Duke on Friday, Sept. 2 at 5pm in the opening game of a UCLA soccer doubleheader with the Bruin women, who host defending NCAA champion Penn State at 8pm. Both matches will be televised on Pac-12 Network. Tickets are on sale now at uclabruins.com/tickets. One ticket gets you in to both matches.
