SAN DIEGO, Calif. -ย The seventh-ranked Bruins fell for the first time this season, dropping a four-set decision to #15 San Diego on Saturday at Jenny Craig Pavilion. Set scores were 25-21, 22-25, 16-25, 21-25. Senior Jordan Anderson led UCLA with 17 kills.

Junior Reily Buechler had a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs, while freshman Torrey Van Winden was also in double figures in kills with a career-best 11. Senior Jennie Frager tallied eight kills and a personal-best six digs, while senior Claire Felix added six kills in an error-free 17 attempts with four blocks. Defensively, senior Taylor Formico posted 15 digs, sophomore Zana Muno added 14 and freshman Savvy Simo notched 12 digs. Junior Ryann Chandler (36 assists, eight digs) and freshman Kylie Miller (13 assists, four digs) set the Bruins to a .228 hitting percentage.

The Bruins trailed just once in the opening set. After UCLA scored the first three points of the match, San Diego netted the next four. But an Anderson kill and a Torero attack error gave the Bruins the lead for good. At 8-7, the Bruins scored five of six on two kills by Van Winden, a combo block by Chandler and Felix, a Muno ace and a USD attack error to go ahead 13-8. UCLA's lead stayed between three and five for the rest of the set. On the Bruins' second set point, Buechler's third kill of the opener finished up a 25-21 victory. Anderson led UCLA with four kills, while Frager and Van Winden posted three apiece. UCLA, which added three aces, out-hit San Diego .270 to .237. Formico and Simo both had four digs.

The Bruins' biggest lead of the second set was two points at 3-1 and 4-2. At 5-4 Bruins, San Diego scored four straight to go up 8-5. The home team wouldn't trail for the rest of the set. Down 18-14, a USD attack error and back-to-back kills by Anderson cut the deficit to one at 18-17, but the Bruins were unable to get all square, dropping the set 25-22. Anderson had six kills in the second, Van Winden added four and Buechler and Frager each posted three. Defensively, Chandler had five digs, while Buechler and Formico each notched four. UCLA was out-hit .372 to .255.

San Diego (5-2) led from start to finish in the third. The only tie was at one apiece, which was followed by six straight Torero points. At 10-3, the Bruins went on a 7-2 run to get to within a pair at 12-10. Buechler had two kills and a block during the run, Van Winden recorded a kill and a solo stuff and Felix had a pair of roofs. But that was as close as UCLA would get, as San Diego finished the third on a 13-6 run to win it 25-16. Anderson and Felix each had three kills. UCLA was out-hit .157 to .094. Muno added six digs and Simo posted five.

The Toreros also did not trail in the fourth. There were only two ties at 1- and 4-all. With USD up 8-7, the home squad went on an 11-3 run to go up by a set-best nine at 19-10. At 23-15, the Bruins scored four straight on an Anderson kill, a USD attack error, a combo block by senior Haley Lawless and freshman Madeleine Gates and a Buechler kill to get to within four. However, the Toreros would win the fourth set 25-21 to send the Bruins to their first loss. Buechler had six kills, Anderson added four and Formico notched four digs. The Bruins were out-hit .390 to .353.
