No. 19 Bruins Head North to Close January

January 26, 2017 | Swimming & Diving

The No.19 UCLA Bruins will close out the month of January with back-to-back dual-meet showdowns against No. 2 Stanford and No. 6 California. The trip marks the Bruins' final one outside of Los Angeles before next month's Pac-12 Championships.

Friday's meet at Stanford will begin at 2:00 p.m. and be shown on Stanford Live Stream. The Cal meet will begin Saturday at noon.

UCLA takes on the Cardinal two weeks to the day of clinching its most recent dual-meet win, a 183-112 decision over Utah at Spieker Aquatics Center. Fittingly, in their final home meet, seniors Linnea Mack and Madison White each won two individual races and a relay. The seniors teamed, along with Sarah Kaunitz and Katie Grover, to take the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:42.66. Mack added wins in the 100 Yard Free and the 100 Yard IM, while White secured victories in the 200 Free and the 200 Yard Back.

On the boards, Bruin junior Maria Polyakova posted two wins as part of the Bruin Diving Invitational. Day 1 saw Polyakova take the 3-meter with a combined score of 674.65, while Day 3 came down to the final dives, as the junior's final attempt secured a 615.55-614.20 advantage over USC freshman Naomi Gowlett.

In second-ranked Stanford, UCLA will face a team that has won 12 straight dual meets dating back to last season. No. 6 Cal, meanwhile, has dropped just one dual meet on the campaign, a narrow defeat at the hands of current No. 1 Texas.

Despite home losses to both teams last season, Bruin Emma Schanz completed a sweep of the 200 Breast across both days. The then-freshman posted times of 2:13.03 and 2:14.31 versus Stanford and Cal, respectively. Stanford defeated UCLA in 2016 by a score of 182-118, while Cal earned a 185-114 victory.

Following the weekend trip, UCLA will return to Los Angeles, where it will close out the regular season at USC on Feb. 10.
