October 13, 2017 | Cross Country

The UCLA men finished ninth and the women 25th at the ninth-annual Nuttycombe Invitational Presented by Under Armour in Madison, Wisc. Junior Robert Brandt earned a seventh-place finish in the men's 8k to lead the Bruins, and freshman Erika Adler led the Bruin contingent in the women's 6k with a 37th-place finish.

Brandt, who transferred to UCLA this season from California, posted his second Top 10 finish in as many meets, clocking in a time of 23:52.4 to place seventh. Brandt, who earlier this season placed third at the Roy Griak Invitational, had the lead at the 6k mark but was caught down the stretch. Garrett Reynolds was the Bruins' No. 2 runner, finishing 33rd in a time of 24:11.1. UCLA had four other runners finish in the Top 100 - Jackson Marshall (64th, 24:27.4), Colin Burke (72nd, 24:31.5), Daniel De La Torre (93rd, 24:40.1) and Myles Smith (94th, 24:41.5). Richard Ho placed 126th in 24:55.2.

Defending Nuttycombe champion Justyn Knight of Syracuse won the race in 23:38.9, and reigning NCAA team champion Northern Arizona took the team title with 50 points. The Bruins finished with 269 points.

Adler was UCLA's top finisher for the second time this season, finishing 37th overall in a time of 20:29.5. One other Bruin finished in the Top 100 - Cassandra Durgy, who placed 99th with a time of 21:17.4. Rounding out the Bruins' Top 5 were Jackie Garner (136th, 21:36.6), Christina Rice (142nd, 21:39.1) and Taylor Taite (181st, 22:08.7). Daniela LoCastro (196th, 22:21.0) and Roni Yamane (215th, 22:58.8) also raced for the Bruins.

"It was a deep field, and the women ran a great race and learned a lot about what they will be up against for Regionals," said assistant coach Jennifer DeRego. "I was very happy to see them come from behind and move up the entire time. Erika had a breakout race, and she really found her groove today."

New Mexico sophomore Ednah Kurgat won the women's race and led her team to the team title with 87 points. UCLA finished with 595 points.

Every Bruin runner on both the men's and women's sides improved upon their season-best times at their respective distances.

A separate Bruin squad will race Saturday morning in Sunnyvale, Calif. at the Bronco Invitational, air quality pending.
