#18 UCLA HOSTS ARIZONA, ARIZONA STATE
The 18th-ranked Bruins open up a four-match homestand this weekend at Pauley Pavilion, hosting Arizona on Friday at 6 p.m. and Arizona State on Saturday at 7 p.m. There will be no television for either match, but both contests will feature free video and audio streams on UCLABruins.com.
WHAT'S NEXT?
UCLA plays its final regular-season home matches next weekend, hosting Colorado at Pauley Pavilion on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 8 p.m. and Utah at the John Wooden Center on Friday, Nov. 10 at 8 p.m. Seniors Reily Buechler and Sarah Sponcil will be honored prior to Friday's contest.
BRUINS IN THE POLLS
The Bruins dropped five spots to 18th in this week's AVCA poll. Seven teams ranked in the current Top 25 are on UCLA's schedule (#2 Stanford, #7 Nebraska, #11 Washington, #13 San Diego, #15 Utah, #16 Oregon and #17 USC), with Colorado and Oregon State also receiving votes. In the Pac-12 Conference Preseason Poll, the Bruins are fifth, receiving 83 points.
NEWS AND NOTES
Senior Reily Buechler's 83 attempts in the Oct. 21 win at Colorado were the most swings for a Bruin since Oct. 12, 2012 when Rachael Kidder had 83 at Stanford ... Buechler had a season-best 23 kills, while freshman Jenny Mosser added a career-high 28. It was the first contest in which a pair of Bruins had at least 20 kills since Oct. 10, 2014 against Utah. Buechler was also a part of that match when she had 20 to go with Karsta Lowe's 30 ... junior Zana Muno comes into this week's play ranked 44th in the nation in digs per set (4.88), while senior Sarah Sponcil is tied for 45th in assists per set (10.70) ... Muno is second among Pac-12 liberos in dps, Sponcil is fourth in aps, sophomore Madeleine Gates is 10th in blocks per set (1.15) and senior Reily Buechler is ninth in points per set (3.73) and 10th in kills per set (3.22). As a team, the Bruins are first in dps (16.49) ... on 19 occasions this season, a Bruin has served at least two aces in a match. Freshman Mac May, the team leader in aces, has done it seven times, junior Kyra Rogers four times and Buechler, Mosser, Sponcil and sophomore Savvy Simo twice ... the Bruins are 11-1 when leading their opponent in hitting percentage and 9-2 when holding their foe under a .200 clip ... Rogers hit a career-best .600 in Friday's match at Washington State, with nine kills and no errors in 15 attempts, her seventh contest this season in which she hit over .400. She has four double-figure kills matches for her career, all this year, posting a season-best 14 at Long Beach State on Sept. 15. Rogers also has an ace in 12 matches, including nine of her last 14 ... Buechler has a team-best 16 double-figure kills matches, surpassing 20 for the second time this season at CU (had 21 vs. WSU on Oct. 1). She picked up her 10th double-double at WSU, which is second on the team. Buechler, who has 1,399 career kills, is 15th in UCLA history. Next up on the list are Lori Zeno (14th, 1,404), Lowe (13th, 1,422) and Kidder (12th, 1,442). Buechler, who served a career-high four aces at Arizona on Oct. 4, has an ace in seven of her last nine ... Mosser set a new career high with 28 kills at Colorado, hitting .400 in the victory, giving her 11 double-figure kills contests and her first over 20. She has at least six digs in seven matches in a row and has a pair of double-doubles to her credit. Mosser also has four aces in her last four contests ... Muno has double figures in digs in nine in a row, registering at least 20 in seven straight. She is averaging 5.86 dps over her last seven matches. Muno recorded 28 in the Oct. 21 victory at Colorado, which is six shy of her career high of 34 at Hawai'i (Aug. 27) ... Simo has double figures in digs in six of her last seven, averaging 3.21 dps during that span. She had 18 digs at Utah on Oct. 20, which was two shy of her career high of 20 against USC (Sept. 20). Simo also has aces in four of her last five matches ... Sponcil had career highs in assists (63), digs (25) and blocks (6) in the win at Colorado. She leads the team with 11 double-doubles, including three in a row. Offensively, Sponcil has at least one kill in 12 matches in a row, including a season-best eight at WSU when she took swings on the outside ... May has eight double-figure kills contests, registering a season-best 18 at Hawai'i. She has at least five kills in every contest this year. The team leader in aces with 20 has at least one in six of her last seven and a pair in three of those seven ... Gates, who had a team-best 16 kills at WSU, has at least seven kills in 14 matches in a row, including a career-high 17 against Oregon (Sept. 22). She did not commit a hitting error versus UO in 29 attempts for a .586 percentage. Defensively, Gates has a team-best 10 matches with at least five blocks, including a career-high 10 against San Diego (Aug. 25).
SCOUTING THE ARIZONA WILDCATS
Arizona (9-12, 3-9 Pac-12) has dropped five of six since a home sweep of USC on Oct. 6, with the lone victory being a sweep of California last Friday. The Wildcats are averaging 12.68 kills, 0.90 aces, 13.85 digs and 2.37 blocks per set, hitting .212 as a team. Four players are averaging over 2.00 kps, led by junior Kendra Dahlke's 3.15. Junior Tyler Spriggs is second (2.43 kps), followed by freshman Paige Whipple (2.36) and redshirt freshman Elizabeth Shelton (2.10). Sophomore Julia Patterson handles the setting duties and is posting 10.19 assists per set. Senior Kimberly Gutierrez is tops with 2.71 dps, while sophomore Devyn Cross is first with 0.94 bps.ย
THE SERIES: BRUINS VS. WILDCATS
UCLA leads the all-time series with Arizona 55-25, snapping a three-match losing streak to the Wildcats on Oct. 4 in Tucson. Reily Buechler hit .500 and had 15 kills, while Zana Muno added 20 digs. The Bruins are 29-10 at home against the Wildcats, with the two teams having split the last six meetings.
SCOUTING THE ARIZONA STATE SUN DEVILS
Arizona State (10-14, 0-12 Pac-12), which is at USC on Friday, is averaging 13.36 kills, 0.78 aces, 16.35 digs and 2.08 blocks per set, hitting .217 as a team. Senior Oluoma Okaro leads the offense with 4.48 kps, freshman Griere Hughes is second (2.94) and sophomore Ivana Jeremic (2.76) is third. Freshman Shelbie Dobmeier (10.73 assists per set) and sophomore Nicole Peterson (10.24) are splitting the setting duties. Senior Halle Harker is tops on the squad with 5.33 dps, while junior Carmen Unzue is first with 0.97 bps.
THE SERIES: BRUINS VS. SUN DEVILS
UCLA leads the all-time series with Arizona State 72-10 and has won five in a row after a four-set triumph in Tempe on Oct. 6. The Bruins had four players with double figures in kills (Madeleine Gates, 15; Mac May/Jenny Mosser, 13; Reily Buechler, 12) and three in double figures in digs (Zana Muno, 24; Buechler, 16; Savvy Simo, 11). The Bruins hold a 37-2 edge in home matches, with ASU's most recent victory at UCLA occurring in five sets in 2013.
