Monahan Wins Again at Trojan Diving Invite

LOS ANGELES โ For the second time in as many days, UCLA senior Ciara Monahan picked up a win at the Trojan Diving Invitational on the campus of USC Saturday. A day after leading wire-to-wire in the 3-Meter, Monahan captured the 1-Meter in a comeback fashion, topping Trojan Carly Souza at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center after an impressive final round.
Monahan had an up-and-down preliminary round, but her 105B fifth dive proved to be the highest scoring of the round. The Forward 2 ยฝ Somersault Pike scored 53.30โthe only dive earning a score of 50 or more in the round. That followed two dives of 48.10 and 49.20. Souza's final five dives went for an average score of 44.84 to secure the top spot and a total score of 263.05. Monahan came in at 249.35.
The Bruin senior was a force in the final round, posting the top two dives of the competition on the way to a score of 300.05 and a total tally of 549.40. Souza and Alexandra Caplan of San Diego State hung strong, pushing Monahan to limit her mistakes. Fortunately, they were few and far between, as she posted scores of 54.60 (5333D), 50.40 (403B), 52.00 (105B) and 53.75 (5233D) on the way to her second win in as many days.
Bruins Alice Yanovsky and Traci Shiver also posted Top-10 finishes. The freshman Yanovsky's performance was her second in as many days, scoring 463.35 on the day to come in eighth. Shiver, meanwhile, totaled 444.80 to finish ninth. Madeline Russell's 427.00 was good for 12th. Russell posted a 46.80 on her third dive of the final round.
Saturday completed Monahan's impressive run at the Trojan Diving Invitational, as she will not compete in the Platform. Eloise Belanger, Russell, Shiver and Yanovsky are scheduled to take part in the competition, scheduled to begin Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
