November 09, 2017 | Swimming & Diving
LOS ANGELES -- UCLA swimming and diving will be represented in a diving-only competition this weekend, when USC hosts its annual Trojan Diving Invitational at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center. Bruins Eloise Belanger, Ciara Monahan, Madeline Russell, Traci Shiver and Alice Yanovsky will take part in the meet, which features both springboard and platform events.
Monahan will take part in the 1-Meter and 3-Meter contests, while each of the others will take a shot at all three. Live updates will be available at DiveMeets.com.
While the Bruins dropped back-to-back meets at Arizona and Arizona State, UCLA divers impressed in the desert. Key to the success was Belanger, who swept both springboard events against the Wildcats. The Montreal, QC, Canada native ran away with both competitions, winning the 3-Meter(314.78) by 36.15 points and the 1-Meter (298.73) by 48.30. The runner-up in both was fellow Bruin Ciara Monahan. Arizona's Delany Schell finished a distant third, while Madeline Russell and Traci Shiver of UCLA earned points.
The competition in Tempe, Ariz. proved stiffer, as Belanger claimed just the 1-Meter (313.05) against the Sun Devils, edging Monahan (309.38) and Arizona State's Ashley McCool (298.13). Defending Pac-12 Platform champion Mara Aiacoboae of the Sun Devils (328.20) barely took the 3-Meter, holding off McCool (324.90) and Belanger (323.10).
The Trojan Diving Invitational will be the first 2017-18 meet for the Bruins that features 1-Meter, 3-Meter and Platform events. Besides UCLA and USC, the women's field will consist of participants from CSU Bakersfield, Cal Poly, Fresno State, San Diego State, UC San Diego and UNLV.
Action begins each day at 11:00 a.m. Friday's session starts with the preliminary and quarterfinal rounds of the women's 3-Meter and the men's 1-Meter. The day will wrap up with the final rounds of both events. Saturday will feature the women's 1-Meter and the men's Platform, while Sunday will conclude the invite with the women's Platform and the men's 3-Meter.
Belanger won the 3-Meter contest at last year's Trojan Diving Invitational.
