BRUINS FINISH REGULAR SEASON AT OSU, USC
The 19th-ranked Bruins conclude their regular season this week, traveling to Oregon State for a Wednesday 1 p.m. matinee before heading to #13 USC on Saturday at 7 p.m. The UCLA-OSU match will feature a live video stream on UCLABruins.com, while the UCLA-USC tilt will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks Los Angeles and UCLABruins.com (audio).
WHAT'S NEXT?
ESPNU will air the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday at 6 p.m., as the 64-team field and 16 host sites will be announced for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament, which will take place Dec. 1 and 2.
BRUINS IN THE POLLS
The Bruins dropped one spot to 19th in this week's AVCA poll. Seven teams ranked in the current Top 25 are on UCLA's schedule (#4 Stanford, #5 Nebraska, #9 San Diego, #12 Washington, #13 USC, #15 Utah and #24 Oregon), with Colorado and Oregon State also receiving votes. In the Pac-12 Conference Preseason Poll, the Bruins are fifth, receiving 83 points.
NEWS AND NOTES
UCLA hit a season-best .366 against Arizona State on Nov. 4. The Bruins also tied a season high with eight aces versus Arizona on Nov. 3, the second time this year UCLA had that many against the Wildcats ... senior Reily Buechler's 83 attempts in the Oct. 21 win at Colorado were the most swings for a Bruin since Oct. 12, 2012 when Rachael Kidder had 83 at Stanford ... Buechler had a season-best 23 kills, while freshman Jenny Mosser added a career-high 28. It was the first contest in which a pair of Bruins had at least 20 kills since Oct. 10, 2014 against Utah. Buechler was also a part of that match when she had 20 to go with Karsta Lowe's 30 ... as a team, UCLA is 45th in the nation in digs per set at 16.73. Senior Sarah Sponcil comes into this week's play ranked 26th in assists per set (11.09), junior Zana Muno is 47th in digs per set (4.91) and sophomore Madeleine Gates is tied for 48th in blocks per set (1.24) ... Muno, in dps, and Sponcil, in aps, are each second among Pac-12 players, Gates is fourth in hitting percentage (.357) and sixth in bps, freshman Mac May is eighth in service aces per set (0.33) and Buechler is ninth in kills per set (3.39) and points per set (3.89). As a team, the Bruins are first in dps (16.73) and fourth in opponent hitting percentage (.196) and assists per set (12.89) ... on 24 occasions this season, a Bruin has served at least two aces in a match. May, the team leader in aces, has done it 11 times, junior Kyra Rogers four times, Sponcil three times and Buechler, Mosser and sophomore Savvy Simo twice ... the Bruins are 15-2 when leading their opponent in hitting percentage and 12-3 when holding their foe under a .200 clip ... UCLA is 13-2 when winning the first set after intermission and 7-1 when winning the fourth set ... Rogers hit a career-best .667 in Sunday's win at California, recording nine kills and one error in 12 attempts. She has nine contests with a .400 hitting percentage or better, including a pair of at least .600 (.600 at WSU on Oct. 27). Rogers also has an ace in five of her last seven ... Buechler, owner of 11 double-doubles, has a team-best 20 double-figure kills matches, surpassing 20 for the fourth time this season at Stanford last Thursday (had 23 at CU, 22 vs. Utah on Nov. 10 and 21 vs. WSU on Oct. 1). Buechler, who has 1,487 career kills, is 12th in UCLA history. Next up on the list are Kaitlin Sather (11th, 1,501) and Kim Krull (10th, 1,575). The senior, who served a career-high four aces at Arizona on Oct. 4, has an ace in 11 of her last 15 ... Mosser posted her 14th double-figure kills contest at Stanford with 19. The freshman, who set a new career high with 28 kills at Colorado, has at least seven kills in 19 of her last 20. She also has at least six digs in 11 of her last 13 matches ... Muno, who is three digs shy of becoming the 24th member of UCLA's 1,000-dig club, has double figures in digs in 15 in a row, registering at least 20 in 10 of her last 13 matches. She is averaging 5.48 dps over her last 13 matches. Muno recorded 28 in the Oct. 21 victory at Colorado, which is six shy of her career high of 34 at Hawai'i (Aug. 27) ... Simo has double figures in digs in eight of her last 13, averaging 2.70 dps during that span. She had 18 digs at Utah on Oct. 20, which was two shy of her career high of 20 against USC (Sept. 20). Simo also had a stretch of four matches in a row with an ace (Oct. 14-27) ... Sponcil leads the team with 15 double-doubles, including seven of her last nine matches. She had career highs in assists (63), digs (25) and blocks (6) in the win at Colorado and has at least 40 assists and 15 digs in five of her last nine contests. Offensively, Sponcil has 10 aces across her last eight matches, recording a career-best four against Arizona ... May, the team leader in aces, has at least one in 11 of her last 13, totaling 19 during that span and two aces or more in seven of those matches. May has 11 double-figure kills contests, including 16 with a .636 hitting percentage against Arizona on Nov. 3. She also tied a career high with four blocks at Cal ... in her last seven contests, Gates has 88 kills and just 11 hitting errors in 166 attempts for a .464 percentage. She has double figures in kills in eight of her last nine, recording a career-best 22 at Stanford. Gates has at least a .400 percentage in 11 contests. Defensively, she has a team-best 15 matches with at least five blocks, including 34 in her last six contests (1.55 per set).
SCOUTING THE OREGON STATE BEAVERS
Oregon State (21-9, 11-7 Pac-12) is the hottest team in the Pac-12, having won five matches in a row, including a five-set victory against then-#10 Washington last Friday. The Beavers are averaging 13.47 kills, 1.25 aces, 15.44 digs and 2.32 blocks per set, hitting .244 as a team. Senior Mary-Kate Marshall is tops on the squad with 4.41 kps and 40 aces, with freshman Maddie Goings (2.73), redshirt freshman Haylie Bennett (2.14) and redshirt junior Kory Cheshire (2.14) each averaging over 2.00 kps. Freshman Kylee McLaughlin quarterbacks the offense and is at 10.78 assists per set. Freshman Grace Massey is first with 3.32 dps, while redshirt junior Maddy Gravley has a team-best 1.11 bps.ย
THE SERIES: BRUINS VS. BEAVERS
UCLA leads the all-time series with Oregon State 59-3 and has won 18 in a row in the series. The Bruins are 29-1 in Corvallis (only loss in 2001). Oregon State's last victory was a five-set triumph in Los Angeles in 2007.
SCOUTING THE USC TROJANS
USC (21-8, 13-5 Pac-12), which is at Oregon on Wednesday, has won six of its last seven entering this week's play. The Trojans are averaging 14.05 kills, 1.13 aces, 13.94 digs and 2.00 blocks per set, hitting .252 as a team. Sophomore Khalia Lanier is first with 3.98 kps and 31 aces, senior Brittany Abercrombie is second at 3.16 kps and senior Niki Withers is third with 2.56 kps. Senior Reni Meyer-Whalley (6.11 assists per set) and sophomore Cindy Marina (5.27) split the setting duties. Junior Victoria Garrick is tops with 3.83 dps, while senior Jordan Dunn is first with 1.00 bps.
THE SERIES: BRUINS VS. TROJANS
UCLA leads the all-time series 63-57, but saw its three-match winning streak versus USC snapped at Pauley Pavilion on Sept. 20 in a five-set loss. Senior Reily Buechler had 15 kills and 19 digs, freshman Jenny Mosser posted 14 kills and sophomore Savvy Simo added 20 digs. The Bruins are 24-21 at matches across town, having won three straight at the Galen Center.
