LOS ANGELESย - The 18th-ranked Bruins produced a balanced offensive attack on Saturday against Arizona State, with five players posting at least seven kills, led by senior Reily Buechler's 12, as UCLA swept the Sun Devils at Pauley Pavilion. Set scores were 25-16, 25-16, 25-21.
Buechler added seven digs with her dozen kills, sophomore Madeleine Gates had 11 kills and just one error in 21 attempts (.476) to go with five blocks and freshman Mac May notched 10 kills and one error in 19 swings (.474) with three aces. Sophomore Kyra Rogers had eight kills, hit .429 and added four digs and four blocks and freshman Jenny Mosser tallied seven kills and eight digs. Senior Sarah Sponcil set the Bruins to a season-best .366 hitting percentage, recording 41 assists, five digs and four blocks. Defensively, junior Zana Muno had 11 digs, while sophomore Savvy Simo registered four.
The Bruins' largest deficit in set one was a pair at 3-1 and 4-2. UCLA (15-8, 8-6 Pac-12) scored the next three on kills by Sponcil, Mosser and Gates, and despite five additional ties, the Bruins led for the rest of the opener. At 11-10, the home team reeled off four in a row on a Gates kill and combo block with Sponcil and two ASU errors. Up 23-16, back-to-back Gates kills wrapped up a nine-point victory. Gates was a perfect 6-for-6 in kill attempts, Buechler (4-for-7) and Rogers (3-for-5) were also error-free and May and Mosser both added three kills, as the Bruins out-hit the Sun Devils .576 to .281.
UCLA led wire-to-wire in set two, scoring five of the first six on kills by Buechler and May, a May ace, a Gates solo block and an Arizona State error. The Sun Devils (10-16, 0-14 Pac-12) got to within two on a few occasions, but could get closer. At 12-9, the Bruins scored six in a row on two kills each by Buechlerย and Gates, a May ace and an ASU error.. Leading 21-16, UCLA netted the final four of the set on a Mosser kill, a Sponcil/Rogers block, a Rogers kill and an ASU error to take the second 25-16. Buechlerย produced four kills, Gates and May were each error-free with three kills in eight attempts apiece and Muno added four digs, as the Bruins out-hit the Sun Devils .263 to .143.
In set three, Arizona State's largest edge was one on three occasions. Trailing 5-4, two Mosser kills, a combo block with Rogers and an ASU attack error put the Bruins up for good at 8-5. At 11-10, kills by Buechler and May and a solo stuff and kill from Gates put the Bruins ahead by a handful. UCLA's lead stayed between three and a set-best six for the rest of the third, as a Buechler kill finished off a 25-21 win. May was error-free (4-for-6) in the third, Buechler added four kills and Mosser and Rogers both posted three. Munoย had five digs. The Bruins out-hit the Sun Devils .293 to .194.
