#13 BRUINS HEAD TO SEATTLE FOR FIRST PAC-12 ROAD TRIP
The 13th-ranked Bruins travel to Seattle this weekend for their first Pac-12 Conference road series, taking on #8 Washington on Friday (6 p.m.), Saturday (4 p.m.) and Sunday (5 p.m.). All three games will be televised live on Pac-12 Network National and Los Angeles and will also feature live stats on UCLABruins.com.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Bruins return to Easton Stadium next weekend to host Oregon in a rematch of last season's NCAA Super Regionals, which were won by UCLA. The games on Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8 will be at 7 p.m. and broadcast on Pac-12 Network, while the Sunday, April 9 contest will be at 2 p.m. and televised on ESPNU.
BRUINS IN THE POLLS
UCLA moved up two spots in both national polls this week, jumping from 15th to 13th in the USA Today/NFCA rankings and from 16th to 14th in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll. The Bruins were first in the Pac-12 preseason coaches poll, earning three first-place votes and 59 points.
RACHEL GARCIA NAMED PAC-12 FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Rachel Garcia earned Pac-12 Conference Freshman of the Week honors, as announced on Tuesday. Last weekend, Garcia recorded a win and a save in the circle with 10 strikeouts in 7 2/3 shutout innings, while adding three hits in nine at-bats.
In a doubleheader sweep against BYU last Saturday, Garcia started game one and tossed a complete-game one-hitter, striking out nine in seven innings. She would come into the nightcap in relief, getting a pair of outs in the seventh and striking out one for the save. At the plate, the redshirt freshman singled in the second game against BYU and added two singles the next day versus Dartmouth.
Garcia is 8-4 with a 1.66 earned run average and 88 strikeouts in 80 1/3 innings in the circle, while hitting .280 at the plate with 12 runs batted in, nine walks and four doubles.
The award is the second of the season for the Bruins and Garcia, who was named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 21. UCLA has won three FOW honors in just the third year the award has been bestowed.
NEWS AND NOTES
The Bruins recorded the program's 1,800th victory with their win last Sunday against Dartmouth ... UCLA had 17 comeback victories last season and already has nine this year, including another one versus Dartmouth ... the Bruins were 22-0 last year when leading after five innings and 23-0 when up after six. This year, UCLA is 17-0 and 18-0 in those instances ... the Bruins led the nation in double plays last season (45) and have 15 in 2017 (19th) ... UCLA is also tied for seventh in the country in home runs (37) and 18th in slugging (.509) entering this week's play ... eight of UCLA's 37 homers have been hit on the first pitch of an at-bat, while each of the last four have been solo shots (17 on the year) ... redshirt freshman Rachel Garcia allowed no runs and just two hits in 7 2/3 innings against BYU last Saturday, striking out 10 and posting a win and a save in the doubleheader. She has allowed zero runs in 12 of her 19 appearances ... junior Johanna Grauer tossed nine shutout innings at the Louisville Slugger Invitational in picking up two victories. She has allowed zero or one earned run in 12 of her 18 appearances, recording a 0.70 ERA, a 8-0 record and 54 strikeouts in 60 innings in those dozen contests ... sophomore Paige Halstead tied a career high with three singles against Dartmouth, the third time she has posted a three-hit contest. She also drove in the lone run in the first game versus BYU thanks to a solo homer ... junior Madeline Jelenicki has hits in nine of her last 13 contests, with seven of those games being two-hit affairs, including one in the second game of the BYU twinbill. She also drove in a pair in that contest to give her a team-best eight multi-RBI games ... senior Gabrielle Maurice stole bases in back-to-back games to end the weekend, putting her in a tie for the team lead with six. She had a pair of infield singles in the second game of the BYU twinbill ... redshirt senior Paige McDuffee allowed just one hit in three innings against Boston University on March 11 ... freshman Bubba Nickles made her season debut in center field last weekend, making three putouts. She had a pair of home runs two weekends ago against Boston and Texas ... junior Kylee Perez had five hits in the BYU doubleheader, recording three singles in game one and a triple and a single in the nightcap. Perez leads the team with 14 multiple-hit contests, including nine with three hits ... sophomore Zoe Shaw drove in multiple runs for the first time this season with a two-RBI contest against Dartmouth. She has hits in four straight games ... senior Delaney Spaulding has hits in 26 of her 31 contests, recording a double in game two against BYU and a single versus Dartmouth. She is in the UCLA Top 10 in 10 categories, including second in runs scored (207) and third in doubles (54) and slugging percentage (.724) ... sophomore Brianna Tautalafua has hits in 10 of her last 13 games, including a double against Dartmouth. She homered in five of seven games from March 5-17 and is tied for 18th in the nation with nine home runs.
SCOUTING THE WASHINGTON HUSKIES
After sweeping its Pac-12 opening series at home against Arizona State and winning a doubleheader at Grand Canyon last Wednesday, Washington was swept at Arizona last weekend. The Huskies (26-6, 6-3 Pac-12) are hitting .340 as a team with 32 home runs and 25 stolen bases, averaging 6.5 runs per game. Freshman Sis Bates leads the team with a .387 batting average, while sophomore Morganne Flores is tops on the squad with eight homers and 37 runs batted in. Sophomore Taran Alvelo is 15-3 with a 2.17 earned run average and 99 strikeouts in 103 1/3 innings, freshman Samantha Manti is 5-1 with a 2.21 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 38 innings and junior Madi Schreyer is 6-2 with a 2.79 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 52 2/3 innings.
THE SERIES: BRUINS VS. HUSKIES
The Bruins lead the all-time series with Washington 53-33 and hold a 24-17 record in games in Seattle. UCLA has won three straight series at Washington (2012, 2014, 2015), all by 2-1 counts. Last season at Easton Stadium, the Huskies claimed the series with victories in two of the three games.
