Seventh-Ranked Bruins Split on Sunday

FULLERTON, Calif. -ย The seventh-ranked Bruins hit six home runs on Sunday, three apiece in each end of a doubleheader, as UCLA defeated South Carolina 5-2 before falling to #22 Baylor 11-6 at the Judi Garman Classic at Anderson Family Field.

In game one, junior Selina Ta'amilo (4-0) picked up the win in relief, tossing four hitless innings. She struck out two and walked three, posting a 1-2-3 inning and both strikeouts in the fourth. Redshirt senior Paige McDuffee started and allowed two runs, four hits and one walk in three innings. On offense, UCLA had six hits, including two by senior Delaney Spaulding.

South Carolina (15-5) grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second when Mackenzie Boesel doubled in a pair of runs. UCLA (16-4) began its comeback in the bottom of the third, as freshman Jacqui Prober led off with the first homer of her career, a shot to right-center, to cut the deficit in half. Sophomore Zoe Shaw followed with a single through the 3-4 hole, sophomore Paige Halstead walked two outs later and junior Madeline Jelenicki put the Bruins up 4-2 with a three-run homer to left-center, her sixth of the season.

In the fifth, UCLA hit its third homer of the game, as Spaulding led off with her sixth of the season to left-center to up the advantage to 5-2.

In game two, the Bruins (16-5) had 11 hits from seven players, as junior Kylee Perez posted three and Jelenicki and sophomore Brianna Tautalafua both had two. In the circle, junior Johanna Grauer (5-1) struck out three in 6 1/3 innings, giving up 11 runs (eight earned), 13 hits and one walk. Ta'amilo got the final two outs, allowing one hit.

Baylor (18-3) took a 3-0 lead in the second on one swing, as Shelby McGlaun hit a three-run homer to left. UCLA came back with two in the bottom of the second. Jelenicki led off with a single to left, and one out later, Tautalafua hit her fifth homer of the season to left-center to get the Bruins to within one.

UCLA took its first lead of the game in the third. Spaulding hit a one-out homer to center to take the team lead with seven to even the score at three. Perez then hustled out a double on a pop up to center, moved to third on a sacrifice by Halstead and scored on a double to left by Jelenicki to put the Bruins ahead 4-3.

The Bears re-took the lead in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs on an RBI single by Kyla Walker, a UCLA throwing error by freshman Bubba Nickles and a wild pitch to go ahead 6-4. In the top of the sixth, Baylor added another run on another Bruin error, this time by Tautalafua, to make it 7-4.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Bruins got back to within one, as Prober singled to left with one out and came home on a two-run homer to left by senior Gabrielle Maurice, her third of the season, to make it 7-6. Baylor added four more in the seventh on a two-run double by Maddison Kettler and a two-run homer by McGlaun to go up by five.

The Bruins take part in their final regular-season tournament next weekend, traveling to the Louisville Slugger Invitational at Long Beach State's 49er Softball Complex.
