BRUINS TRAVEL TO LONG BEACH, HOST TEXAS
In their final weekend before Pac-12 Conference play begins, the 10th-ranked Bruins travel to the campus of Long Beach State for the Louisville Slugger Invitational, facing Eastern Michigan (11:30 a.m.) and Longwood (2 p.m.) on Friday and Boston University (9 a.m.) and the host 49ers (11:30 a.m.) on Saturday. On Sunday, UCLA returns to Easton Stadium, taking on Texas at 4 p.m. The Bruins-Longhorns matchup will be televised on Pac-12 Networks, while all five games this weekend will feature live audio and stats on UCLABruins.com.
BRUINS IN THE POLLS
UCLA fell three spots in both of this week's national polls, dropping from seventh to 10th in the USA Today/NFCA poll and from eighth to 11th in the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball rankings. UCLA was first in the Pac-12 preseason coaches poll, earning three first-place votes and 59 points.
NEWS AND NOTES
The Bruins are eight wins away from 1,800 as a program ... UCLA had 17 comeback victories last season and already has six this year after coming back from an early 2-0 deficit versus South Carolina last Sunday ... the Bruins were 22-0 last year when leading after five innings and 23-0 when up after six. This year, UCLA is 12-0 and 12-0 in those instances ... the Bruins led the nation in double plays last season (45) and have 11 in 2017 (tied for 10th) ... five of the seven victories for redshirt freshman Rachel Garcia have been in relief, as she is 5-1 with a 1.50 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 32 2/3 innings out of the bullpen. She tossed 5 1/3 frames of shutout ball with six strikeouts against #14 Michigan on March 2 ... junior Johanna Grauer leads the team with three complete-game shutouts, ranking her tied for 15th in the nation, after posting one at Cal State Fullerton on March 4. In those three blankings, she has fanned 19 with just nine hits and one walk allowed ... sophomore Paige Halstead opened the season with hits in 15 of her first 18 games. She has also been outstanding defensively, with just one error in 69 chances ... junior Madeline Jelenicki is tied for the team lead with five multiple-RBI games, with four of those contests featuring her hitting a home run. She has homered at least once in each of the first four weekends ... senior Gabrielle Maurice hit her third homer of the season against Baylor last Sunday, a two-run shot. It was her third multi-RBI contest of the season ... freshman Bubba Nickles had a 12-game hitting streak from Feb. 11-24 and reached base in each of her first 14 contests. She had her sixth multiple-hit game at Cal State Fullerton ... junior Kylee Perez recorded her ninth multi-hit contest of the season against Baylor, going 3-for-4. Seven of her nine multi-hit games have been three-hit contests ... freshman Jacqui Prober had a pair of hits in last Sunday's doubleheader, including the first home run of her career against South Carolina ... sophomore Zoe Shaw has a hit in five of her last seven games. She drove in runs in three straight against ranked teams on Feb. 25 versus LSU, Feb. 26 against Florida State and March 2 versus Michigan, including the game-winning runs against LSU and Michigan ... senior Delaney Spaulding has hits in 18 of her 21 contests, including all five at last weekend's Judi Garman Classic. She has also left the yard in each weekend of the season and has a home run in three of her last four contests ... junior Selina Ta'amilo did not allow an earned run in 5 1/3 innings last weekend. She leads the team in ERA at 1.77 ... sophomore Brianna Tautalafua has hits in five of her last seven, with two of them being multiple-hit contests. She homered in the Bruins' last game of the weekend versus Baylor.
SCOUTING THE EASTERN MICHIGAN EAGLES
Eastern Michigan enters this week's play at 6-6, which includes a 4-0 loss at South Florida (Feb. 23) in its only game against a ranked team. The Eagles are hitting .293 as a team with four home runs and 14 stolen bases, averaging 4.5 runs per game. Senior Michelle Kriegshauser (.439), senior Taylor Wagner (.438) and sophomore Lucy Lopez (.423) are all hitting above .400, with Kriegshauser leading the team with two homers and 13 RBI. Senior Abbie Minsker is 2-0 with a 2.18 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 20 2/3 innings, while junior Trisha Trujillo is 4-2 with a 3.30 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 30 innings. The Bruins are 2-0 all-time against Eastern Michigan, winning 3-0 in 1998 and 8-0 in six innings in 2008, with both games taking place in San Diego.
SCOUTING THE LONGWOOD LANCERS
Longwood holds a 6-10 record coming into this week's tournament and has yet to play a ranked team. The Lancers are hitting .210 with seven home runs and 15 stolen bases, averaging 3.1 runs per game. Sophomore Kaylynn Batten is first with a .295 batting average. Sophomore Sydney Gay has started 11 of 16 games, posting a 6-4 record and a 1.67 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 67 innings. The Bruins won the only matchup against the Lancers, which took place in Lakewood in 2009 (12-2 in six innings).ย
SCOUTING THE BOSTON UNIVERSITY TERRIERS
Boston University enters the tournament with a 7-9 record, having defeated then-#23 Florida Atlantic early in the season. The Terriers are batting .280 with eight home runs and 14 stolen bases, averaging 3.3 runs per game. Senior Gabi Martinez is first on the team with a .367 average to go with three homers and 10 RBI, while sophomore Alex Heinen is first with four homers and 11 RBI with a .309 average. Freshman Kali Magane is 4-4 with a team-low 2.33 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 39 innings, while senior Makinna Akers is 3-2 with a 3.21 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 32 2/3 innings. UCLA and BU will be meeting for the first time.
SCOUTING THE LONG BEACH STATE 49ERS
Long Beach State holds a 6-10-1 record entering this week, going 1-4 at the Judi Garman Classic last weekend. The 49ers are hitting .241 as a team with six home runs and three stolen bases, averaging 3.0 runs per game. Sophomore Nichole Fry leads the team with a .348 average to go with five doubles, while senior Sammi Gyerman is batting .333. Senior Christina Clermont is 4-4 with a 3.29 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 51 innings, while freshman Devyn Magnett is 2-2 with a 5.58 ERA and five strikeouts in 26 1/3 innings. The Bruins hold a 71-10 series advantage over the 49ers and have won eight of the last nine matchups.
SCOUTING THE TEXAS LONGHORNS
Texas is 12-9 entering Sunday's contest, having defeated UTSA on Wednesday after being swept in a three-game series at Arizona last weekend. The Longhorns are hitting .298 as a team with 13 home runs and 16 stolen bases, averaging 5.4 runs per game. Senior Devon Tunning is tops on the squad with a .394 average and four homers, while senior Mickenzi Krpec is second with a .378 average to go with two homers and 12 RBI. Junior Paige von Sprecken holds a team-low 2.12 ERA, a 4-1 record and 34 strikeouts in 36 1/3 innings, sophomore Brooke Bolinger is 3-1 with a 2.51 ERA and nine strikeouts in 22 1/3 innings and senior Tiarra Davis is 2-5 with a 2.65 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 39 2/3 innings. The Bruins are 10-5 all-time against the Longhorns, including a 4-1 victory in the NCAA Regionals at Easton Stadium in 2015.
