CORVALLIS, Ore. -
Junior Madeline Jelenicki drove in four runs and tied for the team home run lead thanks to a three-run shot, as the eighth-ranked Bruins held on to defeat Oregon State on Friday by a score of 7-5.

Eight of the nine UCLA (29-11, 5-6 Pac-12) starters had at least one hit, with Jelenicki, senior Delaney Spaulding and junior Kylee Perez each posting a pair. Redshirt freshman Rachel Garcia struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings to improve to 13-6, allowing a run, four hits and four walks. Junior Johanna Grauer fanned one in 1 1/3 frames, giving up four runs and six hits.

The Bruins scored a pair in the top of the first. Perez recorded a one-out single to left, sophomore Brianna Tautalafua reached on an error and Jelenicki doubled to left-center to plate Perez with the game's first run. After a walk to Garcia and a fielder's choice to force Tautalafua at the plate, freshman Bubba Nickles singled off the pitcher to bring in Jelenicki to make it 2-0.

UCLA tacked on five more in the fourth. Three straight singles to open the inning by senior Gabrielle Maurice, sophomore Zoe Shaw and Spaulding made it 3-0. Two outs later, Jelenicki left the yard in a hurry with a shot to left-center, her 10th of the season to equal the team lead, to extend the advantage to 6-0. Garcia would make it back-to-back jacks, sending one out to deep left for her fourth of the year to make it 7-0.

Oregon State (20-18, 3-8 Pac-12) rallied with a run in the fourth on an Alysha Everett homer, another in the fifth on an Everett RBI single and three in the sixth on RBI singles by Kayleen Shafer and Jessica Garcia and a bases-loaded walk to Everett to get to within two. The Beavers would load the bases with no outs in the seventh, but Garcia got out of the jam with a strikeout, a force at home and a fly out to center to help the Bruins even the weekend series at one apiece.

The rubber game of the series will take place on Saturday at 2 p.m. and air live on Pac-12 Network.
