STANFORD, Calif. -ย Junior Kylee Perez recorded a career-best five hits, marking just the ninth time a Bruin had accomplished that feat in a single game, as the 12th-ranked Bruins defeated Stanford 13-8 on Friday at Smith Family Stadium.
It was a career offensive night for many Bruins (35-12, 9-7), who had 21 hits, with every player in the starting nine posting at least one. Perez also scored four runs to set a personal best, while junior Madeline Jelenickiย had a pair of hits and tied a career high with five runs batted in. Redshirt freshman Rachel Garcia set career highs with four hits and three RBI. Also picking up two-hit contests were senior Delaney Spaulding and sophomores Paige Halstead, Zoe Shaw and Brianna Tautalafua.
In the circle, junior Johanna Grauer (10-4) notched the win in relief, striking out three in four innings and giving up four runs, seven hits and seven walks. Garcia started, and also got the last three outs, tossing three frames, striking out four and allowing four runs (two earned), two hits and two walks.
The Bruins scored the game's first run in their first at-bat, as Perez reached on a bunt single, moved to second on a Tautalafua walk and scored on a two-out double by Garcia to right-center.
UCLA tacked on five more in the second. With one out, Halstead launched her fifth homer of the season to right to make it 2-0. Shaw followed with a single in front of the plate, and one out later, Perez singled to center. A double to left by Tautalafua plated Shaw with the Bruins' third run. Jelenicki followed with a double to left-center to bring in Perez and Tautalafua to make it 5-0, while Garcia then doubled to left to bring in Jelenicki with UCLA's sixth tally.
Some sloppiness by the Bruin defense helped Stanford (18-25, 1-15 Pac-12) score four in its half of the second, as the Cardinal plated two on two separate errors and two more on a single by Kylie Sorenson. In the third, UCLA added four more runs. Halstead reached on a bunt single, moved to second on a Shaw sacrifice and scored on a Spaulding single to right to make it 7-4. After singles by Perez and Tautalafua loaded the bases, Jelenicki drew a walk to increase the lead to 8-4. An RBI single to right by Garcia scored Perez to make it 9-4, while a single to right by freshman Bubba Nickles brought home Jelenicki to extend the advantage to 10-4.
A solo homer by Whitney Burks in the third cut Stanford's deficit to 10-5, but the Bruins came back with three in the sixth. UCLA loaded the bases on walks to Shaw and Spaulding and a single by Perez, with freshman Jacqui Prober lifting a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Shaw to make it 11-5. Jelenicki then doubled to right-center to plate Spaulding and Perez to stretch the lead to 13-5.
Stanford scored three in its half of the sixth on a two-run homer by Sorenson and an RBI single by Lauren Bertoy, and would load the bases with no outs in the seventh, but fell five short.
The Bruins and the Cardinal continue their series on Saturday at 1 p.m. No video will be available, but live stats will be at UCLABruins.com.
