LOS ANGELES - Sophomore Zoe Shaw scored the game's lone run on a passed ball in the bottom of the ninth, as the ninth-ranked Bruins clinched a series victory on Saturday with a 1-0 win over #1 Oregon at Easton Stadium.
The Bruins improved to 28-9 overall and 4-4 in Pac-12 play, while the Ducks fell to 35-2 and 8-2 in league action.
Junior Selina Ta'amilo and redshirt freshman Rachel Garcia combined on a five-hit shutout, as the Bruins became the first team to blank Oregon in back-to-back games since 2013. Ta'amilo struck out two in six-plus innings, giving up three hits and one walk. She had a 1-2-3 frame in the first. Garcia relieved Ta'amilo in the seventh and tossed three more scoreless innings, fanning three and giving up two hits to improve to 12-4 on the season. Garcia struck out the last two batters she faced in the ninth.
The Bruins had just four baserunners through the first eight innings and none from the third through the seventh, as Oregon's Maggie Balint held UCLA's bats in check. A hit by pitch of junior Kylee Perez in the first, a single to right by junior Madeline Jelenicki in the second and a Garcia single and walk to freshman Bubba Nickles were the only Bruin baserunners until their final at-bat.
Oregon stranded eight, including one in each inning from the third through the sixth. In the seventh, a pair of singles and a sacrifice gave the Ducks runners at third and second with one out. But on a ground ball by Lauren Lindvall to second, Shaw, who came in from right field to replace Perez following her first-inning plunking, gunned down Jenna Lilley at home for the second out. A grounder to short ended the top of the seventh.
In the ninth, Shaw led off by reaching on an Oregon error and moved to second on a wild pitch, with a walk to freshman Jacqui Prober putting a pair on. After a sacrifice by senior Delaney Spaulding moved both runners up, sophomore Brianna Tautalafua came to the plate. The first pitch from Balint was dropped by catcher Gwen Svekis and rolled to the backstop, as Shaw scampered home with the walk-off win.
The Bruins look for the sweep of the Ducks on Sunday with a 2 p.m. first pitch. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2 and will also feature free live audio on UCLABruins.com.
