#10 BRUINS AT #22 ARIZONA STATE TO END REGULAR SEASON
The 10th-ranked Bruins close out the regular season this weekend at #22 Arizona State. The series begins on Thursday at 6 p.m., continues on Friday at 5 p.m. and concludes on Saturday at 2 p.m. All three games will air on Pac-12 Network. On Sunday, ESPN2 will air the NCAA Selection Show at 7 p.m.
NEWS AND NOTES
The Bruins recorded the program's 1,800th victory with their win on March 26 against Dartmouth ... UCLA had 17 comeback victories last season and have 12 this season, including three walk-off wins ... redshirt freshman Rachel Garcia didn't allow an earned run in 16 straight innings from April 21-26, striking out 18, and last weekend didn't give up any type of run in 7 2/3 innings against Arizona, striking out nine to earn a win and a save. In her 35 appearances, she has given up zero or one earned run in 24 of them ... in back-to-back contests on April 26 at CSUN and April 28 at Stanford, Garcia had a three-hit game and a four-hit contest to set career highs. She has hits in 17 of her last 22 games to raise her average from .261 to .319 ... junior Johanna Grauer posted her 10th win of the season at Stanford on April 28, striking out three in four innings of relief. Grauer has double figures in wins all three seasons ... sophomore Paige Halstead had hits in all three games at Stanford, going 4-for-10 (.400). She hit her fifth homer of the season on April 28 and her first since March 25 ... junior Madeline Jelenicki has tied a career high with a seven-game hitting streak, batting .364 (8-for-22) with two homers and 15 RBI during that current stretch. She has RBI in six of the seven games of her streak, including five at Stanford (April 28), four against Arizona (May 6) and two versus both CSUN (April 26) and Stanford (April 30) ... senior Gabrielle Maurice had a 10-game hitting streak from April 14-30, batting .375 (12-for-32) with two RBI. During her streak, her average raised 50 points from .168 to .218 ... freshman Bubba Nickles has hits in nine of her last 13 contests. On April 23 versus California, Nickles recorded the first two-homer game of her career, while last Friday, she ended a mercy-rule win with a three-run homer against Arizona ... junior Kylee Perez tied a school record on April 28 when she had five hits at Stanford, the ninth time a Bruin has accomplished that feat. Perez also set a personal best with four runs scored and has touched home plate 11 times in her last seven games along with her 13 hits ... sophomore Zoe Shaw, the Bruins' leading hitter in Pac-12 play (.400), has hits in 10 of her last 13, batting .483 (14-for-29) during that span. She has crossed home plate 11 times in her last 13 games ... senior Delaney Spaulding has 12 RBI in her last eight games, including seven in the series at Stanford. She has produced hits in five of her last six, posting a pair on Sunday against Arizona ... junior Selina Ta'amilo tossed 4 1/3 shutout innings on Saturday versus Arizona to win her 13th game of the season. With a 13-0 record, she is within one victory of the most recent undefeated campaign in Bruin history (Michelle Turner, 14-0, 2003) ... sophomore Brianna Tautalafua has hits in five of her last seven games, posting multiple hits in two of those contests. She went 2-for-3 with a two-run double in game one against Arizona last weekend.
SCOUTING THE ARIZONA STATE SUN DEVILS
Arizona State snapped a two-series losing streak in Pac-12 play last weekend, defeating California in two of three contests. The Sun Devils are hitting .280 as a team with 53 home runs and 19 stolen bases, averaging 5.2 runs per game. Three players are hitting over .300, led by senior Chelsea Gonzales (.368), who is first with 45 runs batted in and tied for first with 11 homers. Sophomore Taylor Becerra is second at .354 with nine RBI, while senior Sashel Palacios is hitting .315 with 10 homers and 37 RBI. In the circle, junior Breanna Macha is 12-8 with a 1.96 earned run average and 63 strikeouts in 107 1/3 innings, junior Dale Ryndak is 8-3 with a 1.98 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 84 2/3 innings and freshman Giselle Juarez is 6-5 with a 2.57 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 84 1/3 innings.
THE SERIES: BRUINS VS. SUN DEVILS
The Bruins swept the Sun Devils at Easton Stadium last season to improve to 96-36 all-time in the series. UCLA is 42-19 in games in Tempe, dropping the 2015 matchup (2-1). The Bruins did claim the 2014 meeting at ASU (2-1). Overall, UCLA has won six of the last eight versus Arizona State.
