TEMPE, Ariz. -ย On the same day she was named a finalist for the National Freshman of the Year award, Rachel Garcia pitched a complete game and hit the go-ahead home run, as the 10th-ranked Bruins defeated #22 Arizona State 4-3 at Farrington Stadium on Thursday.

The Bruins (40-13, 14-8 Pac-12) had 12 hits from seven different players, as senior Gabrielle Maurice recorded three, while Garcia, junior Madeline Jelenicki and sophomore Paige Halstead had two each. Garcia improved to 17-7 on the season, striking out eight and giving up three runs (two earned), five hits and one walk. She retired the first nine batters of the game, also posting a 1-2-3 frame in the sixth. Garcia struck out at least one in six of her seven innings, including a pair in the second and third.

UCLA scored a pair of runs in the third to take an early lead. Junior Kylee Perez led off with a single up the middle, moved to second on a grounder by sophomore Brianna Tautalafua, advanced to third on a single to left from Jelenicki and scored on a single to center by Garcia. Maurice followed with a single through the 5-6 hole to plate Jelenicki to put the Bruins up 2-0.

In the fourth, Spaulding took the team home run lead with her 13th of the season, sending one out to right field.

Arizona State (30-18, 9-13 Pac-12) tied the game in its half of the fourth, scoring on RBI singles by Sashel Palacios and Ulufaย Leilua, as well as another run on an error.

The score remained tied until the seventh when Garcia belted her fifth homer of the season to dead center with two outs.

The Bruins and the Sun Devils continue their three-game series on Friday at 5 p.m. The game will air live on Pac-12 Network Los Angeles.
