TEMPE, Ariz. - Senior Delaney Spaulding tied a UCLA single-game record with five hits and five runs scored, while sophomore Brianna Tautalafuaย equaled a personal best with five runs batted in, as the 10th-ranked Bruins routed #22 Arizona State 13-3 on Friday to win the Pac-12 series at Farrington Stadium.
The Bruins (41-13, 15-8 Pac-12) had 18 hits from seven different players, as Tautalafua, sophomore Zoe Shaw and freshman Bubba Nickles each had three and junior Kylee Perez added two. In the circle, junior Johanna Grauer (11-4) struck out three in 4 1/3 innings of relief, giving up two runs, five hits and two walks. Junior Selina Ta'amilo started and fanned one in 2 2/3 frames, allowing a run, two hits and four walks.
UCLA got on the board in its first at-bat, as Spaulding led off with a single up the middle, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a Tautalafua sacrifice and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by junior Madeline Jelenicki.
In the third, the Bruins added two more. Shaw led off with an infield single off the plate, Spaulding doubled to left-center and both scored one out later on a Tautalafua single off the top of the left-field wall to make it 3-0.
Arizona State (30-19, 9-14 Pac-12) got on the board in the bottom of the third on a solo homer by Ulufa Leilua, but UCLA responded with three in the fourth. With sophomore Paige Halsteadย on third after reaching on a fielder's choice and moving up two bases on a Shaw double, Spaulding went the opposite way for her third home run in as many games and her team-best 14th to put UCLA up 6-1. In the fifth, a solo homer by Nickles to left, her 10th of the season, brought the lead to 7-1.
The Bruins added two more in the sixth, opening the inning with three singles in a row by Shaw, Spaulding and Perez. After Shaw was forced at home for the first out of the inning, Jelenicki singled to shallow left to bring in Spaulding and Perez to make it 9-1.
Arizona State stayed alive with two in the sixth on a solo homer by Margaret Stahm and an RBI single by Leiluaย to cut its deficit to 9-3, but UCLA answered again with four in the seventh. With two outs, Shaw walked, Spaulding singled and Perez reached on an error at second, allowing Shaw to score the Bruins' 10th run. Tautalafua followed with her 13th homer of the season, a bomb to left, to make it 13-3.
With her seventh-inning hit and run, Spaulding posted the 10th, five-hit game in school history, equaling Perez's five-hit contest on April 28 at Stanford. The senior also became just the second Bruin to cross home plate five times in one game (Samantha Camuso, Feb. 9, 2008 against Santa Clara).
The Bruins look to finish the regular season with a sweep on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game will air live on Pac-12 Network National and Los Angeles.
