LUBBOCK, Texas - Sophomore Lilia Vu, winner of four tournaments in a row, is in the familiar position of first place following 18 holes of the NCAA Regional at The Rawls Course. Vu shot a 4-under 68 on Monday to lead the field by one shot.
Vu had a field-best seven birdies in round one, gaining strokes on #2, #4, #6 and #9 on the front nine to go with two bogeys. On the back nine, Vu added birdies on #12, #14 and #18, as well as one bogey, to post her ninth sub-70 round of the season.
As a team, the Bruins are tied for third after an 8-over 296. UCLA is three shots back of first-place Arizona State and two strokes ahead of sixth-place San Diego State. The top six teams after Wednesday's final round advance to the NCAA Championships in Sugar Grove, Ill. (May 19-24).
Sophomore Bethany Wu is tied for 12th following a 1-over 73. She made three birdies on #1, #8 and #18, two bogeys and a double. Freshman Mariel Galdiano is tied for 26th, posting a 3-over 75. She recorded five birdies, including three in a row on #2, #3 and #4. Galdiano added birdies on #9 and #12, five bogeys and a triple. Junior Erin Choi shot an 8-over 80 and is tied for 76th, making a birdie on the third, five bogeys and two doubles. Freshman Clare Legaspi notched a non-team scoring 83 (+11) and is tied for 87th, tallying one birdie on #2, eight bogeys and two doubles.
The Bruins tee off #1 on Tuesday at 9 a.m. CT/7 a.m. PT in the order of Legaspi, Choi, Galdiano, Wu and Vu. After battling 20 mph winds on Monday, light winds and scattered thunderstorms are in the forecast for round two. Live scoring will be available here.
